A hiker’s handbook to Madeira

by Scott Crowe, Villa Plus Contributor

Welcome to our quintessential guide to hiking in Madeira. This enchanting Atlantic Ocean island offers a landscape so diverse and dramatic that it feels purpose-built for a walking holiday. There are towering volcanic peaks, deep green valleys and mist-shrouded forests that give its topography of trails something different to offer every time.

Let’s take you through all the things to consider when hiking Madeira, from the best trail times to tick off in the calendar to essential tips for your hike. To tee up your hiking holiday in style, we’ll shortlist our best hiking routes to tackle in this Portuguese paradise, complete with a recommended Villa Plus villa to relax and rejuvenate at.

Madeira’s unique geography

Madeira’s formation through volcanic activity millions of years ago has created a mountainous island that’s truly discovered in all its glory on two feet. At the highest peak, Pico Ruivo stands at an impressive 1,862 metres above sea level and dominates the Madeira sky, whetting the appetite for a hiking holiday.

Hiking Madeira doesn’t only unlock the delights of the island’s natural geography; it also offers a journey of discovery around the engineering genius of the human mind. The island’s network of levadas is a 16th-century infrastructure marvel, distributing the abundance of water from the relatively lush north of the island to the drier south. There are over 2,000 kilometres of these unique irrigation channels today, creating hundreds of scenic levada walks for Madeira hikers to tackle. Following one of these is one of the best ways to discover the island’s mountainous interior.

The best time to go hiking in Madeira

Madeira is southwest of the Portuguese mainland and located around 500 kilometres off the coast of Africa. This gives it a subtropical climate that’s generally great for hiking all year round. Given the diverse topography, conditions may differ at altitude, but when you consider that average temperatures range between 18°C in the winter to 28°C in the summer, Madeira is a very accommodating place for a hiking holiday throughout the calendar. This allows visitors to plan their hikes around other factors, such as the price of flights to Madeira and the availability of premium accommodation like our Villa Plus Signature range.

Generally speaking, the best time to go hiking in Madeira is in the ‘shoulder season’ periods of spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These times of year have a great balance between warm, welcoming temperatures and slightly quieter trails, allowing you to appreciate the flora of the island in even greater measures. The levada trails are a particular delight in spring, with blossoming bursts of blue and purple from the nearby wildflowers.

The best hikes in Madeira

With hundreds of rewarding Madeira hikes to consider, we’ve whittled down the abundance of options into a shortlist of trails to tackle, taking you through their distance, difficulty, highlights and an all-important Villa Plus villa to stay at to complete your Madeira hiking holiday.

1. Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo

Distance: 12km round trip

Difficulty: Hard

Highlights: Mountain ridges, tunnels, sunrise views

This hike is up there with the best in Europe, let alone Madeira. The trail route connects the island’s two highest peaks, Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo. Along the way, you’ll stroll along narrow ridges that rise above the surrounding clouds.

Although it’s a well-maintained popular path, the 12-kilometre route does come with its challenges. There are several steep ascents and descents, as well as tunnels carved into the rocks along the way. These obstacles make the hike even more rewarding and simply unmissable on any Madeira walking holiday, with a section widely known as the ‘Stairway to Heaven’.

Many hikers get up bright and early to see the sunrise at Pico do Areeiro, before starting the journey to Pico Ruivo. When you reach here, your reward is a panoramic view stretching across Madeira and into the Atlantic Ocean, a picture that lives long in the memory.

Stay at: Villa Atlantic Sunset, Funchal – 18km from Pico do Areeiro

2. Levada do Caldeirão Verde trail

Distance: 9km round trip

Difficulty: Moderate

Highlights: Caldeirão Verde waterfall, Laurissilva Forest (a UNESCO World Heritage Site)

This route is what hiking Madeira island is all about. Hidden within the misty heart of the Laurrisilva Forest, this trail takes you through the heart of its invaluable environmental heritage, so much so that it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its ecological importance. Starting at Quiemadas National Park, lush woodland complements the levada as you follow it along steep mountainsides, crossing narrow paths carved into the rock and passing several hand-bored tunnels, a key reminder of Madeira’s incredible engineering heritage.

You’ll be rewarded for your efforts by the sight of the Caldeirão Verde waterfall, or Green Cauldron in English. Here, slender water plunges more than 100 metres down a vertical rockface, a true sight to behold.

Stay at: Villa Sea Shore, Santa Cruz – 25km away

3. Levada das 25 Fontes

Distance: 8km round trip

Difficulty: Moderate

Highlights: Rabaçal Valley, waterfalls

Undoubtedly one of Madeira’s most popular levada walks, this trail again touches on the UNESCO-listed Laurissilva Forest through the Rabaçal Valley. You’ll hear the sound of trickling water and birdsong as you meander through one of Madeira’s most picturesque areas.

As you progress along the levada, you’ll be impressed by the views over the Ribeira da Janela valley, before reaching the Lagoa das 25 Fontes, named as such due to its 25 water springs. These cascade down a moss-covered cliff surrounded by vegetation. Whilst you’re here, it’s also worth checking out the nearby Risco waterfall, standing 100 metres tall. This Madeira hike is a great way to cover the island’s natural beauty over a relatively short distance.

Stay at: Villa Grayci’s House, Calheta – 18km away

4. Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço

Distance: 6km round trip

Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Highlights: Stunning Atlantic Ocean views, coastal cliffs

A truly perfect panoramic picture awaits all those who head for the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula on the eastern tip of Madeira. This semi-arid stretch of volcanic cliffs and rugged coastline traverses into the Atlantic Ocean, where the greens of forest give way to red rocks, shaped by a sea breeze on both sides.

That’s what defines this special stroll, the fact that you can look left and right and feel like you’re out at sea. On a clear day, you’ll be able to spot Madeira’s sister islands. Porto Santo stands 80 kilometres to the north, whilst Deserta Grande is just 23 kilometres to the south. Remember your camera and cherish the memories of this stunning setting.

Stay at: Villa Sea Shore, Santa Cruz – 16km away

5. Caminho Real do Paul do Mar

Distance: 2km round trip

Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Highlights: Historic stone path, panoramic ocean views

This historic coastal path connects the clifftop village of Prazeres with its quaint seaside neighbour, Paul do Mar in the west of Madeira. A part of the ‘Caminhos Reais’ or Royal Road, the stone-built trail winds steeply down cliffs, offering breathtaking views over the Atlantic.

It’s a living reminder of the routes once used by farmers and fishermen to move between the highlands and the coast. Overall, the stroll is a great way to capture the beauty of one of the island’s quieter parts at a pace that suits you – a short but sweet Madeira hike.

Stay at: Villa Theo’s House, Prazeres – 5km away

Hiking in Madeira: trip essentials

  1. Check the weather forecast

Whilst temperatures in Madeira are generally great for hiking, conditions on certain routes can change rapidly, especially at higher altitudes. Double-check the weather forecast before you head out and prepare for every eventuality.

  1. Bring the right gear

Maximise your experience by investing in the right gear for your hike. Sturdy walking boots, a waterproof jacket and a torch if you’re encountering tunnels are all handy additions for a Madeira hiking holiday.

  1. Carry water and snacks

One that’s especially applicable to longer hikes, many of which are in remote areas of the island where you’ll need nourishment to keep your energy levels up. For shorter hikes in more populated areas, plan a stop or two at a local eatery.

  1. Generally, the earlier, the better

You’re rewarded to get up and out early on a hike in Madeira. Generally, trails are quieter in the morning, and it leaves you plenty of daylight hours to complete your trip in a way that suits you.

  1. Stay on marked paths

As tempting as the beauty is, never venture off the trail in Madeira. Take particular care on cliffsides and near waterfalls. Be wary of trip hazards and slippery sections of each route – terrain may change suddenly and differ in quality.

Why neighbouring villas are ideal for group holidays

by Scott Crowe, Villa Plus Contributor

Planning a group holiday can be quite the challenge. Whether you’re organising a multi-generation family trip, a milestone occasion or a getaway with friends, finding accommodation that keeps everyone close to each other is one of the biggest logistical considerations.

This is where our neighbouring villas for big groups come into their own. There is a range across Villa Plus destinations, located literally next door to or within a stone’s throw of each other. Booking one of these special spaces means that your group will be within touching distance, whilst maintaining your own space. Let’s explore how cluster villas can transform the experience of group travel.

Why choose neighbouring villas?

Booking neighbouring villas gives you the perfect blend of togetherness and independence when on a group holiday, something that’s difficult to achieve at a hotel or in a single place to stay.

Perfect for group travel

Staying in neighbouring villas means everyone is in easy reach. Things are organised before you head away, lessening the need for taxis between meeting points, giving everyone a focal point to meet and make holiday memories. You’ll be able to move between the villas in quick-fire time, making it convenient to gather for meals, celebrations and relaxation by the pool.

At the same time, having separate villas gives you your own bedrooms, bathrooms and living spaces. You’re able to retreat and recharge when you want, without feeling too crowded.

Ideal for extended family

Clustering villas together is a perfect set-up if you’re travelling with extended family, especially if younger children are coming along.

If the evening experiences go on well after dusk, having another villa gives parents a place to retreat and make sure the kids stay in their bedtime routine. You’ll have the perfect balance between shared moments and privacy.

Great for special occasions

Whether it’s a big birthday, anniversary or get-together, neighbouring villas provide the perfect setting.

You’ll be able to host group dinners, celebrations by the pool and unwind in the sunshine together, all whilst keeping the accommodation flexible. It’s like having your own private resort for your group.

The practical benefits of neighbouring villas

Beyond the advantages for group holidays, there are also many practical benefits of clustering your villas together:

Space without compromise: Instead of squeezing everyone into one villa, multiple villas give you the space to spread out comfortably.

Flexible budgets: Everyone coming on the group holiday can choose where to stay in the cluster based on their budget, without having to venture to a villa that’s much further away.

Prime locations: Our cluster villas are located in sought-after areas, close to beaches, stunning sea views and lush countryside, so you’ll experience the very best of the destination.

More amenity options: You’ll have multiple pools and living areas to gather in. The younger ones can have their own space whilst the adults relax, and have the ability to host alternately.

Our best neighbouring villas for group holidays

If you’re planning a trip with family or friends, choosing the right villa clusters can make all the difference. We offer a fantastic selection of neighbouring properties across some of Europe’s most popular destinations – let’s take you through our handpicked selection.

Beachside villas in Rhodes

If you’re looking for sunshine and proximity to the beach, look no further than our cluster of three villas in Pefkos, Rhodes. This trio of villas, named Pefkos Cove, Pefkos Shore and Pefkos Sunset, does exactly what they say on the tin.

Each is just 200m away from the beauty of Kavos Beach and full of contemporary fittings, having been built in 2025. Welcoming a total of eight guests each, they’re ready to welcome group holidays to this magical Mediterranean Greek island.

Close to the heart of the action in Menorca

Menorca is an ideal island for a family holiday, with a relatively short flight time from the UK. Get close to the heart of the picturesque south west of the island with our range of cluster villas centred around the popular resort of Calan Bosch

Villa Marte and Villa Pluton are just a pair of the fantastic properties to choose from. The neighbouring villas are just a 15-minute walk from the resort’s marina, where an abundance of bars and restaurants are yours to choose from.

These aren’t the only options in this area either – villas Maui, Avellano and Jupiter are all a literal stone’s throw away too.

Scenic countryside in Corfu

The rural area around Corfu’s Dassia offers a refreshing contrast to the island’s busier resorts. You’ll find rolling green hills, olive groves and a slower pace of life that’s perfect for a relaxing holiday with loved ones.

It’s here you’ll find a homely trio of villas for big groups: Oras Corfu Anastasia, Oras Corfu Thaleia, Oras Corfu Dionisos, and Oras Corfu Tomas. The neighbours are in the heart of the scenic countryside, without being too far from amenities and activities in Dassia itself.

Stunning sea views in Fuerteventura

For groups seeking sunshine and sweeping ocean vistas, Fuerteventura’s Caleta de Fuste offers the perfect setting. This resort on the Canary Islands’ east coast is known for its open landscape and uninterrupted Atlantic Ocean views, creating a real sense of space and calm.

Villas such as the cluster of Maresia, Opal and Pause are ideal for making the most of these surroundings, with elevated positions that capture the sea on the horizon. Whether you’re enjoying a morning coffee on the terrace or watching the sunset with family and friends, these villas give you a scenic and tranquil base for a memorable group holiday.

Pinnacle of quality in Kefalonia

Kefalonia is nothing short of a premium island escape. The quiet Greek gem sits in the Aegean, offering a serene setting that lets quality do the talking. In Sami, villas such as the Mandolin and Corelli cluster offer a modern, stylish base just moments from the beach, with beautiful sea views adding to the sense of luxury.

Further south in Lourdas, Michou Thalassa and Michou Helios continue this theme, combining contemporary design with exceptional locations close to the coastline.

Our tips for booking neighbouring villas

To make the most of your group holiday, a little bit of extra planning goes a long way when booking neighbouring villas.

Book early: With cluster villas in premium locations, demand is high, especially during school holidays and the peak summer months. It’s crucial to secure your preferred duo or trio early, and you’ll have a lot more choice by looking in advance.

Check the layout and maps: Look at the journey time between villas. Whilst many of our cluster villas are neighbours, you may prefer a degree of distance or vice versa, especially if travelling with little ones or elderly relatives.

Plan your shared spaces: Before you travel, decide which villa will act as the main social hub. This might be the one with the largest terrace, best pool area or biggest kitchen. Having a designated gathering spot makes group meals, celebrations and downtime much easier to organise.

Coordinate arrivals and key details: If possible, try to arrive around the same time so everyone can settle in together and kick off the holiday as a group. It’s also worth discussing food shops, airport transfers and who’s staying in which room in advance to avoid any confusion on arrival.

Why Choose Villa Plus for Your Next Holiday?

by Amelia Casey-Rerhaye, Villa Plus Contributor

A villa in the peaceful countryside, a holiday haven by the sea, or a centrally located urban retreat, Villa Plus really does make finding your perfect holiday easy. Before settling on Villa Plus, I’ve explored pretty much every type of holiday accommodation out there: budget hostels, all-inclusive resorts, family rentals, hotel splurges, and even a spare room in a Parisian apartment (awkward, overpriced, never again). But none of them quite matched the ease and comfort I found with Villa Plus.

Tried it all – here’s what works

Hands down, for me, the villa always wins. With Villa Plus, having your own private space in a great location, with that home-from-home feeling, allows you to melt into the holiday experience like no other. Even the most luxurious all-inclusive resorts come with schedules, crowds, and set menus, so it’s hard to feel like the holiday is truly yours. That’s why I keep coming back to Villa Plus, as I have the flexibility to unwind on my own terms.

Father and daughter playing in a pool

Freedom to holiday your way

In a Villa Plus villa, those craving a slower pace can have long, lazy mornings, make breakfast whenever they like, read by the pool, or wander down to the beach. For adventure-seekers, there’s the freedom to get up at sunrise, head off on a hike and not worry about racing back to catch a scheduled lunch.

The well-equipped kitchens in each villa are a game-changer, too. Especially for families like mine, with every dietary requirement under the sun (at hotels, there’s always someone who ends up hungry at the buffet!) With Villa Plus, we can buy our own food, cook when we want, and save on dining costs, yet still treat ourselves to a lovely restaurant meal when we’re in the mood. It’s the best of both worlds.

Casa Joao, Castelo, Algarve

From private pools to pool tables

Every single Villa Plus property comes with its own private pool. No sharing, no awkward small talk with strangers, just you and your crew soaking up the sun in peace. Whether it’s a morning dip, a lazy afternoon float, or teaching the kids how to dive, it’s yours to enjoy whenever you fancy. And it doesn’t stop there. Loads of villas come with extras included, like table tennis, pool tables, barbecues, and even pool heating. It’s the kind of setup that makes staying in just as tempting as heading out.

Support that’s actually supportive

Not many travel companies can say they have a team on the ground, but Villa Plus can. Whether you’ve got a question before you travel or something pops up while you’re away, they’re always ready to help you figure it out. No robotic replies, just friendly, solution-focused people who actually want your trip to be as relaxing as can be. And honestly, it’s nice to know there’s someone real on the other end of the phone when you need them.

Stress-free booking with Villa Plus

Finding a villa that ticks all the right boxes can be a challenge – syncing flights, transport, and checking for nearby amenities adds to the stress. This is where Villa Plus comes in. The easy-to-use website helps you discover your perfect villa in three ways:

  • If you’re fixed on location and dates, fill these into the homepage search bar, then use the filters to narrow down your villa options
  • If you’re keen on a destination but are not fussy about when you go, check out the handy best price finder for the lowest prices month by month
  • If you’re open to holiday ideas, try the helpful ‘inspire me’ tool

Villa Angel, Calan Bosch, Menorca

Personally inspect and select every villa

Unlike a lot of travel companies, Villa Plus only recommends places they’ve visited themselves. Yep, every villa is checked out in person and must pass at least five rounds of inspection before it’s listed (and honestly, more get rejected than accepted). And as they know the villas inside and out, the descriptions on the site are refreshingly clear and honest. No vague or wishy-washy descriptions here. That way, the poor “organised person” in your group who gets dumped with the booking responsibility can have peace of mind. And best of all, the Villa Plus team is just a call away, ready to help with advice, suggestions, and reassurance when you need it.

Excellent on Trustpilot

Let’s be honest, reviews are usually the first thing we all check when planning a holiday. And when it comes to Villa Plus, the feedback speaks volumes. With over 35,000 reviews from real customers on Trustpilot and an excellent overall score, it’s clear people genuinely love their villa experiences. These aren’t cherry-picked quotes either; they’re independent, regulated reviews that give you the full picture. So, if you want to see what others have to say before you book, head over to Trustpilot and take a look for yourself.

Ready to find your perfect last-minute villa? Start exploring the incredible options available and make your spontaneous getaway a reality today.

Maximise Your Holiday Experience with Car Hire

Are you an explorer who likes to see the country you are visiting, and not just the view from the taxi between the airport and the villa? Or are you a ‘flop and drop’ type of person who only gets off the lounger to jump in the pool?

Don’t worry, we won’t judge! But if you are the latter, then you might be missing out on enhancing your holiday experience. Let’s talk car hire…

Why rent a car?

How about spending a day on a nice secluded sandy beach as a change from the pool? A trip to the fabled Birthplace of Aphrodite in Cyprus, a lap of the Monaco Grand Prix circuit if you’re in Provence, seek out the Sicilian film locations for Inspector Montalbano or The Godfather, or go for a leisurely lunch in the beautiful Venetian port of Fiskardo on Kefalonia? Having a hire car makes all this possible!

Fiskardo, Kefalonia

It also makes it easy to get from the airport to the villa via the supermarket to stock up on those all-important goodies. It also resolves the question of what to do when you’ve left the villa at 10am and your flight home doesn’t leave until 10pm. Why not load everything into the car and do some last-minute exploring for the day?

Do I need a car for where I’m going?

Only you know the answer and it comes down to the question we asked in that opening sentence. But we do try to give you some guidance by grading our villas into three categories;

· Car not required – This is where you are close to, or in a resort centre and can walk to a selection of restaurants, mini-markets, shops, bars, and usually the beach.

· Car useful – This is where you can usually walk to some restaurants, a mini-market, and the beach within 20 minutes and where a car will enhance your resort experience.

· Car essential – This is where the villa location is not close enough to restaurants, bars, shops, or the beach to be able to walk or where the villa is so remote that taxis won’t visit.

Check the FAQs section of our website and you’ll find lots of useful information about car hire there. We’ve got decades of experience from hiring cars overseas, and we’ve shared that on our website with various tips and tricks to make renting a car as stress-free as possible.

Have I booked the right number of days?

One final thing…check your flight times. Car rental is charged in units of 24 hours from the time you collect the car so if you pick it up at 11 a.m. the company will expect it back by 11 a.m. on the last day of the rental. So, if your flight home isn’t until 10 p.m., you’ll need to add an extra day!

They say that travel broadens the mind so get out and see some of the countryside or the rich history of our destinations. You won’t regret it!

How to make the most of Lanzarote in 72 hours

The Canary Islands are an all-year-round destination, offering UK holidaymakers endless winter sun. Jodie and Alex from the Villa Plus team travelled to the island at the end of March 2022 to see what it had to offer, and were not disappointed! Here’s the story of their holiday experience…

After four hours of in-flight chatting, before we knew it, we were descending onto the runway into sunny Lanzarote. There is no better feeling than getting off the aircraft and being greeted by the warm Spanish air hitting your face and filling you with vitamin D.

Lanzarote airport is fairly small, so we were through passport control and baggage collection within just half an hour, which kept things nice and simple. We didn’t have a hire car to pick up, so we left the arrivals hall and jumped into one of the many taxis queued up outside the airport to head to our villa in Matagorda, Villa Kikay. The area of Matagorda is only a short five-minute drive from the airport, and the cab ride cost us around €11.

Villa Kikay, Matagorda, Lanzarote

Our centrally-located villa offered three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a heated pool and a great location in Matagorda – just a five-minute walk from the main shopping centre and beachfront. We arrived at our villa quite late in the evening, so we unpacked our bags, freshened up and headed out to explore the immediate area and get our bearings. We found a lovely restaurant on the beachfront, where we had dinner and a cocktail before heading back to our villa for the night.

Visiting Puerto del Carmen

Matagorda to Puerto del Carmen

The next morning, we were up and ready for our first full day of exploring! On went the walking shoes, and off we went with a coffee in hand for a 45-minute walk along the beach front from Matagorda to Puerto del Carmen. There is a long promenade which follows the coastline all the way around from one resort to the other. Here you’ll find great shopping, restaurants and cafes along the walk – perfect for a quick pit stop to admire the views.

Puerto del Carmen is nestled on the coast in the southern central part of the island, and is only a 10-minute drive from the airport. The main Avenida de Las Playas, fondly known as “The Strip”, offers bars, restaurants, shopping, supermarkets, car hire and duty-free shopping. The strip has something to offer everyone – whether you’re travelling as a family, couple, or with friends.

Playa Grande Beach

We found Puerto Del Carmen to be the largest resort on the island. It spans four miles across three golden sand beaches. Playa Grande Beach was clearly the heart of the resort – a mile-long stretch backed by many bars and restaurants. At one end of the strip is the Old Town and harbour, where you can enjoy traditional tapas and the catch of the day at the many eateries on offer. At the other end of the strip is a more lively scene, with plenty of bars and restaurants open until the early hours.

Towards the end of our second day in Puerto Del Carmen, we found a beautiful and very picturesque award-winning seafront bar called ‘Café La Ola’, with stunning uninterrupted sunset views, a range of cocktails and delicious dining options. Alex and I shared a jug of the most incredible sangria while playing cards and watching the sun set.

Café La Ola

As we had chosen to visit Lanzarote in March, the evenings were a little chilly, so once the sun had gone down, we left to find a taverna where we both enjoyed traditional garlic prawn tapas, along with some paella. After a busy day of exploring, we found a taxi along the strip and were back at our home from home in just 15 minutes.

Touring Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca

On our final day, we met up with our very friendly and helpful resort manager Lyn, who kindly drove us from Matagorda to Playa Blanca, which takes around 30 minutes. If you’re in Lanzarote, then Playa Blanca is definitely worth a visit. If you do not have car hire, don’t worry, as you’re able to take a local bus, with travel times of just an hour.

Our overall impression of Playa Blanca was that it seemed more upmarket, with luxury bars and hotels overlooking the fantastic sandy beaches. We found the main bars and restaurants to be busier than Matagorda, but quieter than Puerto Del Carmen. For us, it really was the perfect mix of the two resorts! If you wanted to, you can actually get a ferry from Playa Blanca to Fuerteventura and do a bit of island hopping for the day! It only takes around 30 minutes, and costs approximately €40.

One of the absolute highlights of Playa Blanca was the Marina Rubicon. This luxurious leisure hub is a great place to try some water sports or simply wander around in the evenings.

Marina Rubicon

Overall, both Alex and I had an amazing three days in Lanzarote, and fell in love with Playa Blanca in particular! We will certainly be visiting again.

Best Places to Visit in Italy

Known for its bustling cosmopolitan cities, delicious food and wine, vibrant artistic culture and traditional towns with so much character, Italy remains a firm favourite with holidaymakers from all across Europe and beyond. Spend your days wandering around whitewashed towns with cobbled streets, visit authentic Roman ruins, or relax by the picturesque coastline while enjoying the stunning views. Here’s our round-up of the best places to visit in Italy.

Sicily

Arguably one of the top places to visit in Italy – Sicily is a rugged island steeped in history. A mix of stony beaches, epic landscapes, historical architecture and delicious food and drink, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to activities. If you feel like venturing outside of your private Villa Plutos, you have 6 incredible UNESCO World Heritage sites to explore, including Mount Etna, which dominates the island’s skyline, and is Europe’s largest active volcano. Begin by exploring Siracusa, where food tasting tours are in abundance. Enjoy sampling local wines, olive oils, cold meats, cheeses and pastries, before heading to the pedestrianised Piazza del Duomo, where you’ll find a number of notable landmarks including the town hall and cathedral of Syracuse. If you have a car, head to the Valley of the Temples for an enjoyable day out, where you’ll find plenty of architecture and art to discover.

Ostuni

One of the top places to visit in Southern Italy and otherwise known as Italy’s dazzling white city, Ostuni, which is located in the Apulia region, is well known for its hot climate and sunny days, and old town featuring Roman, Byzantine and Gothic architecture. Spend some time wandering around this ornate town, taking in the stunning arches connecting buildings and narrow alleyways. Stop at a cafe for some Italian coffee, before heading to La Piazzetta Cattedrale, with an ornate facade dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Next, explore the Piazza della Liberta – an authentic plaza where you’ll find a range of shops, landmarks and cafes with a true Italian feel. As evening approaches, watch the sun set from the town’s defensive walls, offering epic views of the surrounding landscape while making memorable snaps for your holiday photo album. Have dinner in a local pasta restaurant before heading back to your traditional Villa Trullo Oro Verde.

Lecce

Travellers heading to the Puglia region should head to Lecce for a day trip, as it’s one of the best places to go in Italy. Otherwise referred to as ‘the new Florence’, the city’s old town boasts some incredible baroque architecture, and you may also spot la pietra leccese as you wander around – a kind of limestone that is used for sculpture in the region thanks to its soft and workable nature. As you wander the streets, if you encounter a bakery selling pasticciotto leccese, it’s a must-try for those with a sweet tooth. A shortcrust pastry filled with custard, it’s the regional sweet treat for Lecce, and comes in many different flavours. The city is also home to a Roman Amphitheatre that dates all the way back to 2 AD, and was discovered in 1901. Part of the structure is actually underground, while the Oronzo Square in which it sits is a favourite among locals.

Noci

A must for foodies, Noci is once of the best places to go in Italy if you love Italian food and wine, with a wealth of tours and food experiences on offer. Tracing back to Norman times, with around 20,000 inhabitants, this city is an ideal place to spend an afternoon wandering around to discover local architecture and to learn more about how Italians cook. Visit the ancient church of Barsento, or the monastery of Abbazia Madonna della Scala, before taking a tour to learn how to make real Apulian mozzarella using cow’s milk. You’ll be invited to make your own cheese and taste it afterwards, and will also learn about the different varieties of mozzarella and their origins. Olive oil tasting tours are also available, as are wine tours, which include wine tasting in a local bistro. No visit to Noci is complete without trying Panzerotto – an Italian street food that has the similar half-moon shape of a calzone. Made with fried pizza dough that is filled with mozzarella and sauce, you can learn how to make this popular dish before trying it for yourself on yet another food tour. Our top tip? Head to Noci when you’re hungry!
