There’s something incredibly special about spring. The days start to lengthen, temperatures begin to rise, and landscapes come to life once again. Nothing quite spoils the senses like that warm ray of sunshine, which has been in short supply over previous months, the sort that hits your skin with an enriching dose of Vitamin D.
As the outside becomes enticing, so do the outdoor events in the calendar. Spring really is one of the best times of the year to delve into the heart and soul of your holiday location, with a range of festivals that cater for locals and visitors alike. In this blog, we’ll take you through the best spring cultural events by theme, covering our wide range of Villa Plus destinations. If you’ve gotten too used to the darker, colder depths of the Northern European winter, imagine the bright change of scenery spring brings. Browse our stunning villas selected by experts and start planning your itinerary!
Floral celebrations
There’s no better sight than spring setting in. These spring destinations burst into bloom, offering travellers a feast for the senses, combining stunning visuals, fragrant gardens and festive local traditions.
1. Festa das Tochas Floridas, Algarve
Where: São Brás de Alportel, Algarve
When: Easter Sunday
Head to the Algarve over Easter to experience one of Portugal’s most striking spring celebrations. Translated as the ‘Festival of Flower Torches’, each Easter Sunday locals carry tall floral torches in a procession through streets decorated with colourful flower carpets. You’ll be immersed in a ritual that beautifully captures the spirit of this region.
As an indication of how embedded the festival is in the local psyche, look to the food that the locals eat as part of the celebration. The almonds and pine nuts that form the staple of this event have been grown by the same family in São Brás de Alportel for more than a century.
This ancient Greek festival lives on in modern Cyprus, where the arrival of spring is honoured with a vibrant floral celebration. Expect a festival of colour as Anthestiria lines the streets of Paphos and Limassol with intricate flower floats, lively parades and market stalls selling everything from plants to artisan crafts.
It’s the perfect way to delve deeper into the culture of Cyprus, whilst enjoying the generous spring sunshine. The atmosphere is very much one of cheer and inclusivity, making it ideal for any group of holidaymakers, including families. You’ll leave here with a spring in your step, of that we have no doubt!
Head for Noto to see a feast for the eyes this spring. The town’s central street, Via Corrado Nicolaci, itself surrounded by elegance, is transformed into a vast canvas of flower petals every third Sunday of May. You’ll see detailed floral mosaics that pay homage to different themes. In 2025, the inspiration was based on Catalonia in Spain.
This traditional Baroque artistic representation dates back to the 1600s, so you’ll be sampling an event that’s deeply embedded in Sicilian culture, as well as visiting the famous island at a time when it truly springs into life for the warmer months of the year.
Spring is a season for fresh flavours, local produce and culinary exploration. Whether it’s the vegetables grown in the lush fields, meat farmed to the highest standards or the local vineyard’s latest creation, mark spring in style with some food at these events.
1. Bacchus – Fête des Vins et de la Gastronomie, French Riviera
Where: Toulon, French Riviera
When: March
Close to 200 wine and artisan producers from across Provence gather for one of the Var region’s most celebrated culinary gatherings at La Place d’Armes in Toulon.
Expect to sample cheeses, charcuterie and condiments throughout the trail of tasty stalls. There are live demonstrations amongst the spring sunshine, so take a notepad with you and leave enough space in the suitcase to fill your wine cellar with whatever takes your fancy!
This spring food festival is marked as one of the most significant in Majorca and celebrates the island’s connection with the sea. Held every April, the event brings together fishermen, local restaurants and artisan producers to showcase their key ingredient of spring: cuttlefish.
Visitors can enjoy a wide range of dishes, from hearty stews to freshly grilled ‘Sípia’. Savour the authentic Majorcan flavours in the serene, maritime setting in the town’s harbour. Add in the glorious spring weather, live music and craft stalls, and you’ve got yourself a spring holiday that will live long in the memory.
Head for Rovinj, Pula or Porec for the ideal base to sample this festival of local flavours. Centred around the deliciousness of traditional egg-based Istrian dishes like ‘Fritaje’, you’ll also enjoy a celebration of the seasonal ingredients that complete these culinary masterpieces. Produce like asparagus brings this choice to life, with it holding a central place amongst the menus of many restaurants in the region.
Look out for wine events to complement the feast of food. In 2025, the town of Gračišće was transformed into a series of taverns hosting local winemakers from across the region. Take a bottle or two back to your villa and admire the Istrian coast over a tipple.
Springtime brings some of the most iconic cultural celebrations across Europe, where centuries-old traditions come alive. These events welcome holidaymakers with open arms and epitomise the sense of community in our hand-picked destinations.
1. Greek Orthodox Easter
Where: Corfu and throughout the Greek islands
When: 12th April
Greece springs to life quite literally as the new season sets in, and there’s no better way to enjoy the warmer weather than by the pool in a Villa Plus villa.
If we had to pick one Greek island to head to for traditional Easter festivities, it would be Corfu. The island blends Orthodox traditions with unique Venetian influences, creating unique customs you won’t find anywhere else in Greece. The ‘botides’ tradition is a particular highlight, where huge clay pots filled with water are hurled from balconies, dramatically smashing on the streets below. There are also midnight celebrations packed with lanterns, music and fireworks, along with huge philharmonic parades that are simply emotional.
Spring temperatures in the Canary Islands are quite often akin to summer levels in many other parts of Europe, making the archipelago a great getaway for some relatively early rays. To sample authentic island life, mark out 30th May. The Día de Canarias joyfully celebrates the local culture and traditions.
Expect folk music performances, sporting competitions and artisan markets that offer visitors a whole range of island specialities. The place is quite simply buzzing, and with villas dotted along all the prime locations in the Canaries, you’ll be in a prime position with Villa Plus to sample the day in all its glory.
The Canary Islands are a true all-year-round destination. In terms of value for money and travel time, they are hard to beat. Warmth, sunshine and relaxation are assured for a destination that’s a relatively short flight time from gloomier pastures over Northern Europe’s colder months.
Choosing which Canary Island to head to in particular can be a challenge, albeit a welcoming one! Each of these islands have their own brand of allure, so deciphering which one is best for you requires a degree of research.
That’s where we can help. In this guide, we’ll break down the unique appeal of each island to help you decide which of the Canaries is for you. Add in our Signature villas, alongside our game-changing Best price finder tool and planning your next Canary Islands holiday is easier than ever.
1. Tenerife
A Tenerife villa holiday offers the widest range of experiences in one place, with a relatively large population of nearly 1 million people. An island of contrasts, it’s a place where golden beaches sit alongside volcanic landscapes, lively resort promenades and traditional mountain villages. Consider an extended winter stay here, given the sheer variety on offer!
The best things to do in Tenerife
Playa del Duque Beach in Costa Adeje, Tenerife
Climb Mount Teide
Spain’s highest peak dominates the Tenerife landscape, creating a dramatic natural centrepiece that appeals to any budding explorer. Winter is a fantastic time to undertake part of this challenge, in the absence of the stifling summer heat. On a clear day, the views of the volcanic landscape and the surrounding Canary Islands are breathtaking.
Play a round of golf
You’ll be awash with golfing options in Tenerife, making it a great choice for a group golf holiday. Two courses in particular stand out, both within a convenient distance of our villas in the southwest of the island. Golf Las Américas and Golf Costa Adeje are sophisticated courses that cater for all ability levels and tie in perfectly with the stunning scenery.
The best places to stay in Tenerife
Costa Adeje
Hugging Tenerife’s western coastline, Costa Adeje is known for its relaxed atmosphere, high-quality beaches and excellent dining choices. Centred around some of the finest beaches in the Canary Islands, stretches of sand like Playa del Duque and Playa de Fañabé are worth a winter holiday alone.
Coastal walkways link all of the amenities, and with a range of our Villa Plus villas nearby, you need not worry about getting from A to B.
Stay at:Villa Atenas in Costa Adeje, just 1.2km from Playa de Fañabé Beach
Known for its relaxed pace and scenic ocean views, Callao Salvaje is the ideal choice for a winter escape that puts peace and quiet at the top of the holiday wishes.
You’ll enjoy elevated views of the Atlantic Ocean from its centre, often stretching west to neighbouring La Gomera. The resort’s volcanic sand beach, Playa de Ajabo, sits neatly beneath the towering cliffs.
Stay at: Villa Bonita Salvaje in Callao Salvaje, just 500m from Playa de Ajabo Beach
Lanzarote’s landscape has been shaped by centuries of volcanic activity, making its scenery dramatic, striking and beautifully preserved. With a much smaller population of just over 150,000 people, there’s a distinct laid-back atmosphere for a villa holiday here.
The best things to do in Lanzarote
The protected landscape of La Geria, Lanzarote
Timanfaya National Park
The only National Park in Spain that’s entirely geological, Timanfaya perfectly represents the island’s volcanic foundations, being shaped by a series of eruptions in the 18th and 19th centuries. Expect to see rusty red colours stretching as far as the eye can see, a barren sight that feels otherworldly.
The area is still volcanically active too and highlighted by demonstrations from park rangers, who’ll show you how intense heat still rises from the ground, producing huge jets of steam.
Go wine tasting
A distinct experience shaped by centuries-old traditions, the island’s vineyards are set amongst black volcanic ash, each protected by a stone wall and set within a shallow pit. This unusual method shields the vineyards from the wind, creating wines found nowhere else in the world.
Head for a La Geria vineyard for a great day out and the chance to bring a bottle or two back to your villa.
The best places to stay in Lanzarote
Playa Blanca
Occupying the southernmost part of the island, Playa Blanca looks over at Fuerteventura to the south. Once a fishing village, it’s developed into a calm resort that’s one of Lanzarote’s most popular places to stay.
Its beaches, Playa Dorada, Playa Flamingo and Playa Blanca, offer calm waters that are ideal for swimming, even in the relatively milder winter. Stylish restaurants and boutique shops give the area a charming, upmarket feel.
Stay at: Villa Santana in Playa Blanca, just 300m from Playa Flamingo Beach
A Puerto del Carmen holiday is one of the greatest antidotes to the winter blues. It’s Lanzarote’s most popular resort for good reason, with a long scenic coastline parallel to the famous Avenida de las Playas.
This promenade hosts everything needed for a great holiday, leading conveniently to the traditional Old Town and harbour area, a throwback to the area’s roots. Playa Grande is the stunning main beach with cliff faces to the west, with the vast stretch of sand at Playa de los Pocillos offering a quieter, refreshing alternative.
Stay at: Villa Pocillos in Puerto del Carmen, just 120m from Playa de los Pocillos Beach
A villa holiday that blends culture, nature and relaxation
3. Fuerteventura
The closest of the Canaries to Africa, Fuerteventura is the island that feels most open. Its large area is home to only 120,000 people, giving it a slow rhythm that truly encourages visitors to switch off. This, combined with the fantastic Fuerteventura villas and beaches, makes it arguably the prettiest Canary Island.
The best things to do in Fuerteventura
Corralejo Natural Park, Fuerteventura
Visit Corralejo Natural Park
Vast rolling sand dunes neighbour the northeast Fuerteventura coastline to create a beautiful natural sight in this protected area.
The landscape is perfect for scenic walks with plenty of space to admire the surroundings. Wonderfully open and remote, it personifies the relative sparsity of the island compared to its larger neighbours like Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
Try your hand at watersports
Fuerteventura’s long stretches of open coastline make it a haven for watersports. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced enthusiast, conditions are perfect for windsurfing, kitesurfing, paddleboarding and snorkelling.
Sailing, kite surfing and the quintessential holiday jet skiing are also immensely popular. There’s the infrastructure to match too, with equipment hire and tuition throughout the island. Corralejo is a great area to head to for all of these aqua adventures.
The best places to stay in Fuerteventura
Corralejo
Corralejo has the perfect blend of amenities and proximity to Fuerteventura’s most striking natural park attraction.
You’ll find everything you need for a perfect villa holiday here. There’s a mixture of beaches, bars and restaurants that lend themselves to the town’s beauty and casual charm. There are great connections north across the water to Lanzarote, too.
Stay at: Villa Bella Vista in Corralejo, just 20m from Popcorn Beach
Caleta de Fuste is in a fantastically convenient location close to the island’s airport. It’s made up of a curved bay that cuddles Playa del Castillo, a vast expanse of sand that forms one of Fuerteventura’s best beaches.
The resort’s compact centre has a great selection of restaurants, cafes and shops, and two of the Canary Islands’ finest golf courses are within touching distance. Fuerteventura Golf Club and Golf Club Salinas de Antigua attract players from around the world.

The winter solstice is a time to embrace nature’s quiet magic. It marks the shortest day of the year, when one of Earth’s poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the sun. This celestial moment signals the start of astronomical winter and the gradual return of longer days. As the season turns, it offers a chance to pause, reflect, and welcome a sense of renewal as we look forward to brighter days ahead.
Villa Plus has a fantastic range of properties available throughout the winter season, including Madeira and three key Canary Islands (Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura). From nestling around the fire to spending time in nature, here are some traditions and activities to celebrate the winter solstice in the comfort of a winter villa.
Prepare a festive feast
Stop by the local market to pick up quality meat and fresh vegetables, and prepare a feast in your villa’s indoor or outdoor dining area. Slow evenings around the table, rich with laughter and storytelling, offer the perfect chance to savour seasonal delights and treasure each other’s company.
Honour the return of light and the darkness of winter with the powerful ritual of lighting candles. The flickering wicks create an enchanting atmosphere that invites individual contemplation or shared heartfelt conversations through the long winter nights.
Many of our European villas are surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty, from olive groves and stretches of soft sand to sky-skimming mountains. Your villa offers an ideal base for spending time outside, reinvigorating your senses and feeling at one with the stillness of the winter landscape. Whether you decide to climb a mountain as dawn breaks or watch the sun dip below the horizon at dusk, seek sunlight on your face, soak in its healing powers, and return from your villa holiday feeling restored.
Bring a notebook with you on your villa holiday and take a moment to put pen to paper – reflect on the year that has been, let go of anything that no longer serves you, and set intentions for the year ahead. This mindful activity helps you pause and acknowledge the people and experiences that have brought you joy. It also creates headspace to accept new opportunities and start the new year with a sense of optimism.
You might have heard of the word “FOMO”, or ‘the fear of missing out’. But during the winter solstice, celebrating “JOMO”, or ‘the joy of missing out’, is welcomed! Practising the art of saying no and allowing yourself to slow down can be incredibly restorative. Why not snuggle up under a blanket in your villa, read wintry books and enjoy a self-care routine? A bit of quality ‘me time’ can be so liberating.
Take a seat at your villa’s breakfast bar, dining table, or on a sunny lounger on the private pool deck, with a piece of paper and a pen. Write down thirteen individual wishes or intentions for the coming year, and on each day of your holiday following the winter solstice, burn one slip, releasing them into the ether. The final wish remaining after the 12 days is the one you are personally responsible for manifesting through your own actions. Enjoy this fun seasonal ritual, and see which ones come to fruition in the new year…

Practice yoga
Yoga is an ancient, soulful practice that encourages a sense of alignment and inner peace. Find a quiet space inside or on the decking outdoors, then flow through some simple stretches, or follow a winter solstice sun salutation class on YouTube. It will help you to feel grounded and in tune with the turn of the season.

Q&A
What is the winter solstice?
Winter solstice is the longest night of the year when the Earth’s axial tilt is at its maximum away from the sun. While it brings the darkest day, it symbolises the return of light, new beginnings and the cyclical nature of the seasons.
What winter solstice traditions are there?
Winter solstice can be celebrated in many ways, as mentioned in the article above. Traditionally, Yule is an ancient 12-day pagan winter festival that celebrates the winter solstice, including traditions like decorating with evergreens, feasting, gift-giving and lighting a yule log.
When is the winter solstice?
In the northern hemisphere, the winter solstice usually falls on the 21st or 22nd of December each year.
What Villa Plus winter villa destinations are there?
Villa Plus offers winter villas in Madeira and the Canary Islands, specifically Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

We’ve got a whole host of warm destinations with a wide range of homely Villa Plus villas for the whole family to relax and unwind in over the festive season.

Located conveniently close to the whole host of festive traditions and events, you’ll be living in a real home-from-home that will play the perfect host to your celebrations with the loved ones. Here’s why you should pick us for your next December holiday:
Kitchens for a culinary masterpiece
Whether you’re preparing a full festive feast based on the delicious dishes we’ve mentioned, or simply grazing on some snacks throughout the day, your villa kitchen will give you total flexibility.
There’s always somewhere to open presents, gather together for some Christmas games or enjoy some peace and quiet away from it all.
Heated private pools
A Christmas morning swim isn’t out of the question. Expect to spend a pleasant afternoon in the sun relaxing in the generous and private outdoor spaces our villas provide.
Everything is taken care of before your arrival, so rather than fixed meal times and bustling corridors of hotels, everything can be done at your own pace so you can focus on making memories together.
Madeira is typically mild and pleasant throughout December, with daytime temperatures reaching somewhere between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius.
Madeira Christmas traditions
Christmas in Madeira involves magical local customs that have been practiced for centuries. One of the most loved is ‘Missas do Parto’ (Childbirth Masses), a series of early-morning church gatherings in the nine days leading up to Christmas from 16-24 December. This is followed by the Missa do Gallo, a Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.
Another highlight is the 23rd December Market Night, an unmissable evening where Madeirans shop for last minute gifts amongst a feast of street music, carols and festive treats.
Madeira’s capital, Funchal, is home to one of the best Christmas light displays in Europe, illuminating the Avenida Arriaga with a procession of colour that’s complete with festive stalls and live entertainment. There are also concerts held in the city, ranging from classical performances to traditional folk songs, held al fresco around the city’s Cathedral and public squares.
Consider extending your stay until New Year in Madeira. You’ll be rewarded with the world-famous Funchal Bay fireworks, a great way to round off the festive period.
Festive cuisine
Comforting Madeiran Christmas flavours are led by carne vinha d’alhos (pork marinated in wine and garlic), alongside favourites like espetada (beef skewers). On the sweet side, bolo do mel (honey cake infused with spices) is exquisite, along with Bolo Rei (King’s Cake) if you’re extending your holiday to early January.
And of course, no December holiday in Madeira is complete without a glass or two of the iconic Poncha, made from sugarcane rum, honey, sugar and orange or lemon juice. The drink served as the inspiration for the Brazilian Caipirinha.
You can expect pleasant, mild weather in Tenerife over the festive period, with daily high temperatures in the region of 21 to 23 degrees, a far cry from back home!
Tenerife Christmas traditions
Beléns define Tenerife over Christmas. These beautifully detailed nativity scenes go far beyond those of the typical biblical story. Entire landscapes are recreated in miniature form, complete with tiny fishermen, artisans and desert scenes. The town of La Orotava is a particular highlight, turning belén-spotting into a festive trail through its historic streets.
As Christmas Day approaches, families gather for a big dinner on Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) before attending Misa del Gallo (midnight mass), which is often followed by music in village squares.
Open-air celebrations are the norm over Tenerife’s holiday period and include the famous Christmas Day Symphony Orchestra performance, packed with heart-warming classical music.
There are festive parades in Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, with artisan markets popping up across the island through December too.
Festive cuisine
Tenerife’s access to the sea is celebrated in its Christmas culinary traditions. Cherne (wreckfish) is an immensely popular dish, served with classic Canarian potatoes, cabrito (young goat) and finished off with sweet almond-based treats like turrón.
There’s a huge emphasis on outdoor dining too, which adds an extra ingredient to these tasty dishes.
You’ll be more than comfortable outside during the day in Lanzarote, with daily temperatures in the region of 17 to 21 degrees Celsius on average throughout December.
Lanzarote Christmas traditions
A product of its incredible geography, Lanzarote brings its landscape to life through its nativity scenes over the festive period. These are often built using volcanic rock and sand to reflect the dramatic scenery of the island.
A standout tradition is Los Ranchos, which involves folk-music groups dressed in traditional attire singing religious songs in village squares. This creates a magical atmosphere in the run up to the big day.
You’ll find a range of markets throughout Lanzarote, epitomising the island’s slightly more laid back feel compared to its neighbours.
Towns like Arrecife and Teguise sprinkle these markets with children’s workshops, live music and street performances. Coastal promenades are lined with lights, and there are a range of live nativity productions too.
Festive cuisine
Hearty meals are the order of Christmas Day in Lanzarote, led by sancocho canario (salted fish stew). Local seafood is served with locally grown sweet potatoes to create a festive feast.
Seasonal sweets like roscos de anís (aniseed doughnuts) and mantecados (shortbread cookies) go down a treat with the island’s famous volcanic wines.
Expect average daytime temperatures of 19 to 22 degrees celsius during a December stay in Fuerteventura, making outdoor Christmas experiences the norm for islanders and visitors alike.
Fuerteventura Christmas traditions
The island leans into its community spirit over the festive period, crafting bespoke nativity scenes, decorating plazas with lights and creating handmade ornaments.
Corralejo Christmas market is the place to be in the build up, and on Christmas Day itself, many head to the beach for a festive dip.
Fuerteventura’s very own Tabajoste group hosts an unmissable Christmas concert that has been running for over 20 years and has become a staple of the festive build up on the island.
If you plan on extending your stay into January, the Three Kings parades on 6 January are an unforgettable cultural experience. Camels, dancers, colourful floats and music fill the streets as sweets are tossed to children. Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario host two of the liveliest celebrations.
Festive cuisine
Queso con almendras (cheese with almonds) and truchas (sweet potato pastries) are just a couple of the delicious festive Fuerteventuran snacks to try.
The main festive meal is a nod to the island’s fresh seafood, featuring prawns with pink sauce (gambas con salsa rosa), similar to a prawn cocktail dish in the UK.

Languedoc is one of those places that completely surprises you. Before visiting, I’d heard it described as the “real South of France” – less polished than Provence, but bursting with character, history, and some seriously underrated beaches. After spending time exploring its cities, coastlines, and countryside, I can confirm: it’s a place that truly has it all.
From medieval fortresses to Mediterranean harbours, ancient canals to buzzing squares, my trip through Languedoc took me from quiet coastal towns to some of France’s most vibrant cities. Here’s what I discovered – and why I can’t wait to go back.
Collioure: Colour, charm, and the castle by the sea
Collioure village in Languedoc, South of France
My journey started in Collioure, a postcard-perfect coastal town near the Spanish border. The Château Royal de Collioure sits proudly by the water, surrounded by pastel buildings that look like they’ve been painted for a movie set. I wandered through narrow streets filled with art galleries, cafés, and the smell of grilled seafood drifting from the harbour.
Just a short stroll away, Plage de Port d’Avall was the ideal place to slow down. The mix of pebbles and golden sand, with the castle as a backdrop, made for a perfect afternoon. Collioure has this relaxed, bohemian feel – part fishing village, part artist’s paradise – and it’s easy to see why painters like Matisse fell in love with it.
Villelongue-dels-Monts: Countryside serenity
Villelongue-dels-Monts in Languedoc, South of France
From the coast, I headed inland to Villelongue-dels-Monts, a tiny village tucked among the Pyrénées foothills. It’s the kind of place where life moves at a gentler pace. The views stretch across vineyards and olive groves. After the bustle of the coast, it was the perfect contrast – quiet, authentic, and completely peaceful.
Narbonne and the Canal de la Robine
The Canal de la Robine in Narbonne city, Languedoc, South of France
Next up was Narbonne, one of Languedoc’s oldest cities and once a major Roman port. Today, the Canal de la Robine runs through its centre, lined with trees, market stalls, and cafes. I spent a morning walking along Les Barques Allée, stopping for a croissant and coffee while watching boats glide past. Narbonne has that classic French charm but without the crowds – just locals enjoying life by the water.
Carcassonne: A step back in time
Medieval fortified city of Carcassonne in Languedoc, South of France
Then came my favourite stop – Carcassonne. I’d seen pictures before, but nothing prepares you for the moment those medieval walls rise up in front of you. The fortified Cité de Carcassonne feels straight out of a fantasy film, with cobbled streets, towers, and panoramic views over the Aude countryside.
Wandering through its maze of alleys, I found hidden courtyards, artisan shops, and tiny restaurants serving tuna tartare. As the sun set over the ramparts, the whole place glowed gold. It’s easily one of the most magical places I’ve ever visited.
Béziers, Agde and the coast
The city of Beziers in Languedoc, south of France
Heading west, Béziers impressed me with its elegant boulevards and the mighty Saint-Nazaire Cathedral overlooking the Orb River. From there, I followed the canal route down to Port du Cap d’Agde, where boats bobbed in the marina and beach bars came alive as evening fell.
The coast here feels untouched compared to some French hotspots – plenty of space, endless sea views, and a laid-back vibe that makes you want to stay longer than planned.
Montpellier: My favourite city in France
City of Montpellier in Languedoc, South of France
If Carcassonne stole my heart for its history, Montpellier won me over with its energy. The Place de la Comédie is the city’s beating heart – all grand buildings, café terraces, and street performers. It’s young, stylish, and full of life (and yes I found Matcha!), with a mix of old architecture and modern art that gives it a distinctive feel.
Aigues-Mortes: Salt, sand, and spectacular views
The commune of Aigues Mortes in Languedoc, South of France
On my way home, I made one final stop at Aigues-Mortes, a medieval walled town surrounded by pink salt flats. Climbing the ramparts gave me panoramic views over the shimmering landscape – an unexpected and beautiful finale to the trip.

With local experts on the ground, we’ve personally selected and inspected stunning villas tucked away from the crowds. Whether it’s the understated elegance of France’s Languedoc, the rustic allure of Croatia’s northern Istrian peninsula, the secret corners of Sicily, or the postcard-perfect scenery of Provence, here’s a rundown of ideal relaxing villa holidays that will lead you beyond the tourist trail.
Undiscovered Istria
The town of Rovinj in Istria, Croatia
Split, Dubrovnik, island hopping, and medieval city walls – Croatia’s Dalmatian coast is well-known. But with the attention now also turning to its neighbours, Albania and Montenegro, the Istrian peninsula has quietly slipped under the radar. The northeast of the country is a gloriously authentic showcase of Croatian history. The expansive coastline is peppered with Venetian villages and hidden beaches, worlds away from the busy regions further south.
Thanks to Istria’s delightful climate, its produce is so famed in southern Europe it even seduced the Romans, who turned Pula into a hub of commerce and trade. The capital comfortably exhibits beautiful Roman architecture and ruins, like its 2000-year-old amphitheatre, while the smaller towns found on hilltops and along the coastline are known for their medieval Venetian red tiled roofs. With rolling hills draped in lush green, the Istrian countryside is a patchwork of vineyards and olive groves, perfect for leisurely wine tours and scenic hikes that could rival the landscapes of Tuscany or Umbria.
Our expertly picked Croatian villas are all located centrally in the Istria peninsula, and with a car it’s easy to explore the charming markets, restaurants and towns. With its easy-going atmosphere, mixed with fun activities, picturesque hills and crystal water, maybe there’s still a lot to find in Croatia?
Italy’s Paradise: Sicily
Noto old town in Sicily, Italy
“You can’t understand Italy without visiting Sicily”, is a commonly said phrase among Italians. Sicily has the life and soul of Italy bursting from its seams. Unduly overlooked due to its rather nefarious history, Sicily has come alive with art and culture, hosting some of the most spectacular beaches and beautiful cities, which effortlessly blend the Italian energetic lust for life with rest and relaxation.
Where Palermo and Taormina have turned into hotspots of summer holidaying, Ispica, on the southern tip of the island, is less frequented. Consequently, its stunning sandy beaches remain uncrowded, and the town, part of the UNESCO heritage site of Val di Noto, boasts the signature Sicilian baroque architecture and is well connected to the larger vibrant city of Syracuse, home to Sicily’s Puppet Theatre tradition.
Whether you’re looking for a couple’s getaway or a family summer holiday, the quieter southern regions are a perfect base for enjoying the Sicilian Mediterranean in all its authentic glory. With gorgeous, calm beaches at the doorstep of your Sicilian villa and family-run trattorias around every corner, the list of things to do in Sicily is endless.
Greek island hopping without the hop: Lefkada
Nidri in Lefkada, Greece
What if you could just cross a bridge and have island life right there down the road? Lefkada, an Ionian island conveniently connected to mainland Greece via a causeway, is an undisturbed paradise. An island holiday, without the ferry timetables or abrasive crowds, and a family-friendly villa with a view, is almost too good to be true.
Lefkada beaches are famed for their drama, with white cliffs plunging into turquoise waters, but it remains quiet and relaxed. It has a liveable ease in its small-town atmosphere, and it’s accessible to drive around. Whether you’re escaping with your partner or taking the kids on your villa holidays, let the days merge into one long heavenly blur by the pool overlooking the sea. A villa on this hidden gem is what Mediterranean dreams are made of.
France, the gift that keeps on giving: Provence and Languedoc
Provence, France
Now, I know, and you know, that Provence has always been somewhat on the radar, but as the Côte d’Azur dazzles all with its fancy yachts and sparkling sea, the rolling lavender hills seem to have been somewhat forgotten. The luscious greenery and chirping cicadas of Provence should not go unappreciated, however, and with a quintessential French house, paired with a private pool and maybe a local wine, a southern French summer is just around the corner.
Tucked away between the jaw-dropping towns of Avignon and Aix-en-Provence lies the perfect opportunity to truly acclimatise to the slow pace of the warm Provençal countryside. Surrounded by vineyards, mountains, rivers and lavender, Provence is romantic, exciting and enriched with culture. Avignon is home to the breathtaking Palais des Papes, a towering fortress in the centre of the town. Once the centre of the Catholic church, this stunning town is usually overlooked by international tourists, allowing visitors to explore its beauty in peace and quiet. With the French Riviera at your fingertips and the resplendent lavender fields abloom, Provence is a classic for a reason.
Carcassonne in Languedoc, France
However, if you want to move away from the painterly scenes of Provence but love wine, the sea and the odd French chateau or two, Languedoc is your best bet for villa holidays. Truly a hidden gem, overpowered by its neighbouring stars Montpellier, Marseille and Nice, this region, nestled between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, is one for the books.
Leave the glitz and the glam in Cannes, and explore the vibrant streets of Beziers, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. Even better if timed with the August Feria, a five-day festival where the town’s French and Spanish heritage explodes out in the week of festivities. And if historic quiet towns and long sandy beaches aren’t enough, wine pours out of this little corner of France like there’s no tomorrow. Producing even more than Bordeaux (and at far more reasonable prices), it’s not surprising that everywhere you look are hills lined with rows of vines. Languedoc villa holidays offer a peek into this astoundingly underrated part of France, letting you bask fully in the blissful sunshine and untouched beauty of French country living.
Nothing quite gets you away from the hustle and bustle like a good old round of golf, and if there’s one region that captures the essence of golf holidays, it’s the Costa del Sol.
Formed by a wide area that stretches from Malaga in the east to Gibraltar in the west, this sun-drenched area has earned the nickname ‘Costa del Golf’ for good reason. In this guide, we’ll take you through all there is to know about teeing off in this popular region of Spain, from the best time to go to a range of things to consider before you head off. We’ll also round up the best places to head to, add a set of golf courses to tackle and the perfect large Villa Plus villa to host you and your fellow players for some downtime.
Why choose the Costa del Sol for a group golf holiday?
Costa del Sol holidays are almost unrivalled when it comes to golf. The area’s charms are a key reason Valderrama became the first European course outside of Britain to host the Ryder Cup in 1997. Whether you’re a beginner with a higher handicap that plays a simple course at a snail’s pace, or a seasoned player with an intricate eye for detail, you’ll find holes to suit you amongst a region with an impressive range of options. From a round of links along the coast to inland rugged layouts, there are well over 70 courses to choose from for every level of skill, making the Costa del Sol perfect for a group holiday with a range of different abilities in your party.
Quality, variety and crucially, convenience combine to provide a setting that holidaymakers return to time and time again. It’s incredibly easy to travel between the main golfing hubs, meaning you can play multiple courses during your time away. When you step off the course for some post-round analysis, you’re never too far from a place to relax, unwind and dine, exemplified by our stunning range of Costa del Sol villas.
The best time to go on a Costa del Sol group golf holiday
Great weather is key to a great round of golf, and as a region with an average of over 320 days of sunshine a year, a golf holiday in the Costa del Sol is a genuinely world-leading choice throughout the calendar.
Playing affordable golf and getting the best bang for your buck is always a win. The shoulder seasons of March to June and September to November give any golfing party the perfect balance between stunning weather and maximum value. Temperatures hover between 20 and 25 degrees throughout the day – a comfortable level without being too excessive.
Golf courses and driving ranges are also in prime condition, and tee times are a lot less busy compared to the summer peak. You’ll also find a sharper contrast in spring and autumn between the relatively unsettled weather conditions in northern Europe and the glorious weather in southern Spain. Check out our Villa Plus best price finder to find a golfing holiday time that ticks all the boxes.
The best places to play golf in the Costa del Sol
With a wealth of options along Spain’s southern coastline, we’ve whittled down the numbers into a shortlist of the very best for you to fill out a scorecard on, conveniently grouped by Costa del Sol resort. Mijas golf courses
1. Mijas Golf International
Difficulty: Moderate
Featuring not one, but two 18-hole courses, this complex is unmissable on any Mijas golf holiday. The Los Lagos and Los Olivos courses offer wide fairways, large greens and scenic backdrops of the surrounding rolling hills. Both were designed by the experienced golf architect Robert Trent Jones.
It’s accommodating enough for those with a mid-handicap without being too easy for experts.
Mijas Golf International, Costa del Sol
2. Santana Golf
Difficulty: Moderate
Set within a former avocado plantation, this is another great Mijas golf course to tick off the Costa del Sol bucket list. Expect gently rolling terrain, water features, mature tree hazards and well-positioned bunkers. These strategic obstacles make it a satisfying course to navigate, without being one that’s solely for experienced players.
The setting is everything, making the relaxation of every round what a golf holiday is all about.
Santana Golf, Costa del Sol
3. La Cala Resort
Difficulty: Moderate to hard
Three championship 18-hole courses form one of the largest golfing complexes in Spain, set amongst the scenic foothills of Sierra de Mijas. Each of America, Asia and Europe (as they’re named) has its own quirks, but all combine picturesque mountain and valley views on one side with the picture-perfect sight of the Mediterranean Sea on the other.
There’s variety for all skill levels without the need to travel when you choose to play some rounds here.
This compact course is conveniently located just outside Fuengirola. Formed of nine holes, the course is beautifully maintained and cleverly laid out, featuring wide fairways, strategic bunkers and well-placed water hazards. A friendly, low-key atmosphere makes it an enticing place for beginners or for a warm-up round.
Given its proximity to the centre of town, it’s the ideal choice for a morning tee time followed by an afternoon at the beach.
Cerrado del Aguila Golf and Resort, Costa del Sol
2. Chaparral Golf
Difficulty: Moderate to hard
This popular choice weaves dramatically through a pine forest, complete with scenic sea views from several holes along the way. No two holes feel alike as you navigate the 18, with significant elevation changes adding an extra challenging layer to a round here. Being one of the more technical choices along the Costa del Sol means you’ll want to devote more time to getting to and from the clubhouse!
It’s worth noting that the impressive range of golf courses in Mijas are also easily reachable from the Fuengirola area.
Nestled in an incredibly convenient position for a Calahonda villa holiday is La Siesta Golf. This charming nine-hole course is compact but was cleverly designed by Enrique Canales Busquets. There’s attention to detail in abundance through the mix of uphill and downhill holes.
Greens reward accuracy over power, making it a great option to practice and refine your short game. All in all, it’s a great option to warm up any Costa del Sol golf holiday.
La Siesta Golf, Costa del Sol
2. Miraflores Golf
Difficulty: Moderate
Forgiving holes and intricate technical challenges combine to make Miraflores Golf an immensely intriguing proposition for both beginners and golfing purists alike. To pinch another sporting saying, it’s a real tale of two halves, with the front nine warming players up with generous fairways and open approaches.
The back nine is a refreshing contrast, rewarding strategic play of the percentages, given its water hazards and elevation changes.
Miraflores Golf, Costa del Sol
3. Capobino Golf Marbella
Difficulty: Moderate to hard
Spectacular sea views and a layout full of character greets every player who steps on the fairway at Capobino Golf Marbella. Scenic surroundings combine with a solid hole design to make this an unmissable stop on your Costa del Sol golf holiday.
The friendly clubhouse is well worth a visit here, complete with a terrace overlooking the 10th and 18th holes.
Our tips for a group golf holiday in the Costa del Sol
Book early
Given their popularity, tee times at our recommended courses can sell out well in advance so it’s important to check availability and tailor your Costa del Sol golf holiday around this.
Create an itinerary
Make the most of your time by planning it all ahead of time. Make a checklist of golf courses you want to tackle and work out the logistics. Build in some free time. Things often take longer than anticipated, and you’ll still want time to relax.
Consider your transport
The needs of a larger group require greater consideration when getting from A to B and back to your Villa Plus villa on the Costa del Sol. Look at the options of hiring transport and consider a designated driver or minibus service – both handy for any post-round drinks!
Pack smartly
Check the dress codes of the courses that catch your eye and pack your case appropriately. Have practical options to change into and bring a generous amount of sun cream, given the amount of time you’ll be spending outdoors.
Assign a group leader
Having a focal point for green fees and holiday payments can minimise the back and forth of planning a large group holiday. Find a responsible member of the group to handle these key components of a great golf holiday in the Costa del Sol.
A villa in the peaceful countryside, a holiday haven by the sea, or a centrally located urban retreat, Villa Plus really does make finding your perfect holiday easy. Before settling on Villa Plus, I’ve explored pretty much every type of holiday accommodation out there: budget hostels, all-inclusive resorts, family rentals, hotel splurges, and even a spare room in a Parisian apartment (awkward, overpriced, never again). But none of them quite matched the ease and comfort I found with Villa Plus.
Tried it all – here’s what works
Hands down, for me, the villa always wins. With Villa Plus, having your own private space in a great location, with that home-from-home feeling, allows you to melt into the holiday experience like no other. Even the most luxurious all-inclusive resorts come with schedules, crowds, and set menus, so it’s hard to feel like the holiday is truly yours. That’s why I keep coming back to Villa Plus, as I have the flexibility to unwind on my own terms.
Freedom to holiday your way
In a Villa Plus villa, those craving a slower pace can have long, lazy mornings, make breakfast whenever they like, read by the pool, or wander down to the beach. For adventure-seekers, there’s the freedom to get up at sunrise, head off on a hike and not worry about racing back to catch a scheduled lunch.
The well-equipped kitchens in each villa are a game-changer, too. Especially for families like mine, with every dietary requirement under the sun (at hotels, there’s always someone who ends up hungry at the buffet!) With Villa Plus, we can buy our own food, cook when we want, and save on dining costs, yet still treat ourselves to a lovely restaurant meal when we’re in the mood. It’s the best of both worlds.
Every single Villa Plus property comes with its own private pool. No sharing, no awkward small talk with strangers, just you and your crew soaking up the sun in peace. Whether it’s a morning dip, a lazy afternoon float, or teaching the kids how to dive, it’s yours to enjoy whenever you fancy. And it doesn’t stop there. Loads of villas come with extras included, like table tennis, pool tables, barbecues, and even pool heating. It’s the kind of setup that makes staying in just as tempting as heading out.
Support that’s actually supportive
Not many travel companies can say they have a team on the ground, but Villa Plus can. Whether you’ve got a question before you travel or something pops up while you’re away, they’re always ready to help you figure it out. No robotic replies, just friendly, solution-focused people who actually want your trip to be as relaxing as can be. And honestly, it’s nice to know there’s someone real on the other end of the phone when you need them.
Finding a villa that ticks all the right boxes can be a challenge – syncing flights, transport, and checking for nearby amenities adds to the stress. This is where Villa Plus comes in. The easy-to-use website helps you discover your perfect villa in three ways:
If you’re fixed on location and dates, fill these into the homepage search bar, then use the filters to narrow down your villa options
If you’re keen on a destination but are not fussy about when you go, check out the handy best price finder for the lowest prices month by month
If you’re open to holiday ideas, try the helpful ‘inspire me’ tool
Unlike a lot of travel companies, Villa Plus only recommends places they’ve visited themselves. Yep, every villa is checked out in person and must pass at least five rounds of inspection before it’s listed (and honestly, more get rejected than accepted). And as they know the villas inside and out, the descriptions on the site are refreshingly clear and honest. No vague or wishy-washy descriptions here. That way, the poor “organised person” in your group who gets dumped with the booking responsibility can have peace of mind. And best of all, the Villa Plus team is just a call away, ready to help with advice, suggestions, and reassurance when you need it.
Excellent on Trustpilot
Let’s be honest, reviews are usually the first thing we all check when planning a holiday. And when it comes to Villa Plus, the feedback speaks volumes. With over 35,000 reviews from real customers on Trustpilot and an excellent overall score, it’s clear people genuinely love their villa experiences. These aren’t cherry-picked quotes either; they’re independent, regulated reviews that give you the full picture. So, if you want to see what others have to say before you book, head over to Trustpilot and take a look for yourself.
It’s never too late, or too early, to book. With the affordability of Villa Plus’ premium villas, no hidden costs, and all the amenities you could hope for on a villa holiday… maybe it’s time to start thinking about next summer? Bookings for 2026 are open, so get your pick of the lot while they last at www.villaplus.com
Madeira Island in Portugal is a lush, volcanic paradise rising dramatically from the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a land where subtropical beauty meets adventure, relaxation, and some of the finest food and wine you’ll ever taste. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie, a nature lover, or someone who just wants to soak up the sunshine with a glass of Poncha in hand, visiting Madeira makes the ultimate villa holiday. So, if it’s not already on your travel bucket list, here’s why it should be.
The Landscape: A Natural Wonderland
Madeira is a place that truly takes your breath away, and not just because of its steep hills! The island’s volcanic origins have blessed it with dramatic cliffs, rolling green valleys, and otherworldly mountain peaks. If you love hiking, you’re in for a treat. The island’s famous Levada walks (narrow irrigation channels that crisscross the landscape) make for some of the most scenic trails you’ll ever set foot on. The Levada do Caldeirão Verde, for instance, leads you through lush forests, past waterfalls, and into a breathtaking emerald-green canyon. For something even more dramatic, hike up to Pico do Areeiro at sunrise and watch the clouds swirl beneath you – it’s pure magic.

Sun, Sea, and Stunning Coastlines
For those who prefer the coast, Madeira’s beaches are as unique as the island itself. While it’s not your typical golden sand destination (though Porto Santo, Madeira’s neighbouring island, has miles of stunning sandy beaches), you’ll find plenty of gorgeous spots to swim, snorkel, and soak up the sun. Praia Formosa, near Funchal, is a mix of pebbles and black volcanic sand, perfect for a refreshing dip. Meanwhile, Seixal Beach, with its dramatic mountain backdrop and jet-black sand, appears to be something out of a fantasy film. And if you’re a fan of wild swimming, the natural lava pools in Porto Moniz are an absolute must. Formed by volcanic rock and filled by the ocean, they offer a unique and utterly relaxing experience.
No visit to Madeira is complete without spending time in its capital, Funchal. A blend of old-world charm and modern sophistication, this coastal city is packed with things to see and do. Start your day at the Mercado dos Lavradores, a lively market brimming with exotic fruits, fresh seafood, and stunning florals.
Later, for a bird’s-eye view of the city, take the cable car up to Monte. Here you’ll find the stunning Monte Palace Tropical Garden, one of the top things to visit in Madeira. Meandering through this lush paradise, filled with rare plants, koi ponds, and intricate tilework, is an experience in itself. Once you’ve admired the gardens, swap the cable car for a thrilling ride back down in one of Madeira’s famous wicker toboggans.

The Food: A Gastronomic Delight
Madeira is an island for food lovers. Fresh seafood is the star of the show here, with specialities like espada com banana – black scabbardfish served with caramelised banana (trust us, it works). Or why not try lapas, which are grilled limpets dripping in garlic butter. If you love meat, try espetada – juicy, skewered beef seasoned with garlic and bay leaves, traditionally cooked over an open flame.
And then there’s the island’s legendary drink: Poncha. Made from sugarcane rum, honey, and fresh lemon or passionfruit juice, this potent little cocktail packs a punch. Locals swear it cures colds, bad moods, and just about anything else – but go easy, because it’s deceptively strong! For the best Poncha, head to a small tasquinha (traditional bar) in Câmara de Lobos, the fishing village that Winston Churchill once painted.
Poncha is a traditional alcoholic beverage from the island of Madeira
One of the most unforgettable experiences in Madeira is spotting whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. The waters around the island are home to a staggering variety of marine life, and boat tours run all year round. Imagine watching a pod of dolphins play in the waves or catching a glimpse of a majestic sperm whale. These are the kind of moments that become etched in your holiday memories.
And let’s not forget Madeira wine. Specifically, it’s a fortified wine that’s been beloved by European royalty and American presidents for centuries. Whether you like it sweet, dry, or somewhere in between, it’s always worth visiting one of the island’s traditional wine lodges for a tasting. Blandy’s in Funchal is one of the most famous. Head here for fascinating tours where you can learn about the unique ageing process that gives Madeira wine its distinctive flavour.

Adventure Awaits in Madeira
If you’re looking for thrills, Madeira delivers. Canyoning, where you navigate waterfalls and rock formations by rappelling, climbing, and swimming, is one of the most exciting ways to explore the island’s hidden landscapes. Or how about paragliding over the cliffs of Cabo Girão, one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe? If you’d rather keep your feet on the ground, jeep safaris through the island’s rugged interior offer an exhilarating way to see the wilder side of Madeira.

With its subtropical climate, Madeira is a fantastic year-round destination. Even in winter, temperatures rarely drop below 16°C, making it a great escape from chilly northern Europe. Each season brings an eclectic calendar of events, inviting you to embrace the vibrant spirit of the island.
What’s Happening Year-Round in Portugal’s Island Paradise?
February: Carnival Festivities commence with joyful daytime parades. Picture elaborate floats, samba dancers and themed costumes. The streets of Funchal become a grand spectacle with music and street performers. It’s a must-see!
May: Experience the mesmerising Madeira Flower Festival. Downtown Funchal blooms with epic floral displays, dancing and live music. It’s one of the most visually stunning and culturally rich times to visit the island.
June: This is when the Atlantic Festival kicks off, and Funchal bursts into a kaleidoscope of colour and music. Expect street performances, cultural showcases, and the Madeira International Fireworks contest lighting up the sky.

On 12th August 2026, Majorca and Menorca will become a starlit stage to watch an extraordinary astronomical event: a total solar eclipse. Passing over the Arctic Ocean, Greenland, Iceland, the Atlantic Ocean, and northern Spain, the greatest show on earth will reach its grand finale in the Balearic Islands. Here’s how you can be a part of it!
2026 total solar eclipse explained
This mesmerising natural phenomenon occurs when the moon moves between the Earth and the Sun in perfect alignment, casting a shadow for a few minutes. It blocks out the sun’s light and transforms it into a surreal, sparkling halo, or ‘corona’, surrounded by mystical twilight.
An arc of darkness called the path of totality flows across the planet. The closer you are to the centre of this path, the longer the eclipse will last. Anywhere outside it, the Sun will only be partially covered. That’s why, if you are on that line at the predicted time, under clear skies, you’ll catch a glimpse of this mind-blowing mathematical miracle in our corner of the universe.
Why the Balearic Islands are perfect for the 2026 solar eclipse viewing
While total solar eclipses occur somewhere on the planet roughly once a year, viewing the 2026 event from the Balearic Islands is uniquely special:
A dramatic sunset setting: the eclipsed sun will hover just 3°degrees over the western horizon, where the sky meets the sea.
Prime positioning: The eclipse’s centre line passes directly through Palma in Majorca, offering an optimal vantage point and one of the longest durations of totality in Spain.
Festival atmosphere: Across the Balearics, local traditions will blend with the thrill of this rare cosmic event. Think coastal promenades and lively plazas alive with music, food stalls, and countless photo opportunities along the waterfront.
At Villa Plus, we invite you to enjoy the solar eclipse from the comfort of our exclusive villas in Majorca and Menorca. These Balearic Islands offer a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural vibrancy, perfect for soaking up the celestial atmosphere and celebrating the eclipse alongside fellow starry-eyed enthusiasts.
Renting a private villa with Villa Plus offers:
Privacy and comfort: Your private place to enjoy the moment away from the crowds, with the flexibility to join the celebrations when you choose.
Standout stargazing locations: Many of our villas feature terraces, infinity pools, or gardens that are ideal for watching the sunset. Several are also positioned near prime solar eclipse viewing points.
Fantastic amenities: Fully equipped kitchens, spacious outdoor living, and private pools that have been personally inspected many times by our experts.
The exact timing and length of the total solar eclipse on 12th August 2026 will vary depending on your location along the path of totality. Check the local time and eclipse maps to pinpoint the best viewing moment for your area.

Tips for the Perfect Eclipse Experience
To make the most of the experience, here’s some advice to keep in mind:
Plan ahead and book early: August is the peak holiday season in the Balearics, and the eclipse will only increase demand. Secure accommodation as early as possible to secure the best location and amenities.
Watch the weather: Clear skies are anticipated, particularly on the coastal islands, but there are no guarantees!
Arrive at your viewing spot early: West-facing vantage points will fill up quickly. Reserve a seafront restaurant table or pack a picnic and head to a clifftop for an uninterrupted view.
Embrace local traditions: Keep an eye on tourist board websites for traditional music, dance and food events to enhance your trip.
Sun Safety
First and foremost, it’s never safe to look at the Sun without special equipment, even during an eclipse – except for those brief moments of totality. Make sure to:
Use certified solar eclipse glasses with an ISO 12312-2 certification.
Keep solar glasses on during the partial phases to protect your eyes from harmful rays.
Only remove them during totality, when the Sun is fully covered. As soon as the sun begins to reappear, put them back on.
Only a tiny fraction of humanity has ever witnessed a total solar eclipse, but on 12th August 2026, you could be one of them. Picture staring up in wonder (with sun goggles on!) on a Mediterranean island… the day turns to night, the stars emerge, and soon an ethereal cosmic experience unfolds before you.

Why Visit? Apart from its stunning scenery, the beach has a unique mix of pebbles and sand, and the water is crystal clear. This makes it ideal for snorkeling. Underneath those turquoise waves, you’ll find fascinating rock formations and plenty of fish. There’s also a monastery up on the hill that you can visit for a bit of culture and incredible views over the bay.
Top Tip: Paleokastritsa can get busy, especially in peak summer, so aim to get there early or consider visiting in the shoulder season if you want a quieter experience.
2. Glyfada Beach – Sandy Bliss for the Whole Family
If you’re traveling with kids or just prefer a big sandy beach, Glyfada Beach is your go-to. Located on the west coast of Corfu, Glyfada is known for its golden sand, shallow waters, and fun, family-friendly vibe. With plenty of beach bars and restaurants nearby, it’s a great spot to settle down for the day.
Why Visit? Glyfada is one of Corfu’s most well-organized beaches, with sunbeds, umbrellas, and plenty of watersports on offer. The beach is backed by rocky hills and pine trees, which make for a stunning backdrop. Plus, the sunsets here are absolutely mesmerizing. Picture yourself with a cocktail in hand, watching the sun sink into the horizon – it’s pure bliss!
Top Tip: While the beach has a chilled-out atmosphere during the day, it can become more lively in the late afternoon. If you’re after a quieter experience, mornings are ideal.
3. Issos Beach – A Natural Wonderland

The shallow waters and soft sand make it a fantastic spot for families, but it’s also a favorite with windsurfers and kite surfers thanks to the breezy conditions.
Top Tip: Bring a picnic! There are fewer amenities here, so pack snacks and drinks to enjoy a relaxed beach day surrounded by nature.
4. Canal d’Amour – For Romance and Adventure
Canal D’Amour or Channel of Love in Sidari, Corfu island in Greece. Famous romantic beach with clay rocky cliffs and rugged coast. Popular destination for summer vacation.

If you, like thousands of other viewers, were addicted to the TV show KAOS you may have noticed that the land of the gods and living is the island of Crete. This Greek haven is considered to be the birthplace of Zeus, and the surrounding islands are the very creatures he defeated, turned to stone, and threw in the water.
Not only is the biggest island of Greece worthy of being home to the ancient gods and goddesses, but we have also made it worth exploring on your next Villa Plus holiday. Going from East to West, experience everything from ancient tales to excellent cuisine, local tavernas, breathtaking views, historical ruins, and stunning beaches fit for gods and humans alike.
Plaka at the end of the world
Travelling East through stunning peaks and arriving at the coastal shore with crystal clear water, Plaka makes it feel like you’ve reached the end of the world – and what a beautiful end it is. Gaze at the spectacular floating fortress of Spinalonga, or why not jump on a boat to visit this tiny island. Here, you can climb up the fortress to enjoy the picturesque views of the ruins set against the backdrop of the navy blue sea and distant mountains of Crete.
A Malia Party fit for Dionysus
Malia is one of the great cities built by the Minoans, a people named after King Minos (who is President Minos in the TV show). Today, the town is not only coveted for its sandy beaches and pulsing nightlife, but it is also home to the Palace of Malia. Discover this archaeological site just before closing hours to watch the sunset-lit ruins and for a chance to capture some magical shots without too many lurking tourists. Then head back into the resort centre for a long line of bars with endless cocktails and partying till the sun rises back up.
Heraklion – the heart of human KAOS
Heraklion, the biggest city on the island, and the human political centre of the TV show serves as a historical landmark influenced by many nations throughout time. Start your day at the Old Arsenal Docklands and continue your walk through history gazing at the Venetian-made city walls and the Koules Fortress. End your day outside of the city at the famous archaeological site; the Palace of Knosses, which according to legend was built to capture Ariadne’s brother, the mythical bull-like Minotaur, in its underground labyrinth.
The sunbathed city of Rethymnon
Venturing west of the island, you’ll pass by Rethymnon which is well worth a stop, as it is not only home to a historical Old Town with an ancient harbour and Venetian Fortress, but also hosts a 13-kilometre stretch of Blue Flag beaches. You’ll be spoiled for choice of places to unwind near the shore, and when food cravings hit, you can indulge in a wide selection of cuisine from one of the many local tavernas.
The grass is always greener in Chania
As you drive through winding mountain roads, approaching the ancient city of Chania, you’ll discover why the west side of the island is considered the greener picturesque part. With pink sand shores, white mountains, and hidden beaches, the natural beauty of the landscapes is truly unbeatable. Treat yourself to godly wine at one of the family wineries, and feast like a local in Chania with an exciting array of authentic street food, or stroll through markets of homemade olive oil and honey (…although we can’t promise the latter wasn’t made by Hera’s bees).
So whether you want countryside, seaside, or beachside – explore our Crete villas today and walk in the footsteps of the characters and gods of the ancient and modern world of KAOS with us.
A little insider note: the actual filming took place in Andalucia and Costa del Sol, so if you want to discover the live set of KAOS, have a look at our villas in one of these destinations too!

Are you an explorer who likes to see the country you are visiting, and not just the view from the taxi between the airport and the villa? Or are you a ‘flop and drop’ type of person who only gets off the lounger to jump in the pool?
Don’t worry, we won’t judge! But if you are the latter, then you might be missing out on enhancing your holiday experience. Let’s talk car hire…
Why rent a car?
How about spending a day on a nice secluded sandy beach as a change from the pool? A trip to the fabled Birthplace of Aphrodite in Cyprus, a lap of the Monaco Grand Prix circuit if you’re in Provence, seek out the Sicilian film locations for Inspector Montalbano or The Godfather, or go for a leisurely lunch in the beautiful Venetian port of Fiskardo on Kefalonia? Having a hire car makes all this possible!
It also makes it easy to get from the airport to the villa via the supermarket to stock up on those all-important goodies. It also resolves the question of what to do when you’ve left the villa at 10am and your flight home doesn’t leave until 10pm. Why not load everything into the car and do some last-minute exploring for the day?
Do I need a car for where I’m going?
Only you know the answer and it comes down to the question we asked in that opening sentence. But we do try to give you some guidance by grading our villas into three categories;
· Car not required – This is where you are close to, or in a resort centre and can walk to a selection of restaurants, mini-markets, shops, bars, and usually the beach.
· Car useful – This is where you can usually walk to some restaurants, a mini-market, and the beach within 20 minutes and where a car will enhance your resort experience.
· Car essential – This is where the villa location is not close enough to restaurants, bars, shops, or the beach to be able to walk or where the villa is so remote that taxis won’t visit.
Check the FAQs section of our website and you’ll find lots of useful information about car hire there. We’ve got decades of experience from hiring cars overseas, and we’ve shared that on our website with various tips and tricks to make renting a car as stress-free as possible.
Have I booked the right number of days?
One final thing…check your flight times. Car rental is charged in units of 24 hours from the time you collect the car so if you pick it up at 11 a.m. the company will expect it back by 11 a.m. on the last day of the rental. So, if your flight home isn’t until 10 p.m., you’ll need to add an extra day!

In a fast-paced world where quality time with loved ones is a precious commodity, the concept of a multi-generational villa holiday has gained significant popularity. This unique holiday experience brings together multiple generations under one roof, fostering deeper family connections, creating lasting memories, and providing a range of benefits that extend far beyond a typical getaway. From shared experiences to enhanced bonding opportunities, let us delve into why a multi-generational villa holiday is an extraordinary idea that should be embraced by families everywhere.
Celebrating Togetherness
A multi-generational villa holiday offers an ideal setting for all family members to come together and celebrate the joy of togetherness. The spaciousness and privacy of a villa provide an exclusive retreat where grandparents, parents, and children can enjoy each other’s company without the distractions of everyday life. It allows for shared meals, group activities, and conversations that deepen family bonds and create cherished memories. Whether it’s a game night, a poolside gathering, or a sunset barbecue, these moments of togetherness become the highlight of the holiday.
Multi-Generational Learning
The beauty of a multi-generational villa holiday lies in the wealth of knowledge and wisdom that can be shared across generations. Grandparents can pass down stories and traditions to their grandchildren, while parents can offer guidance and life lessons. Children, in turn, can bring a fresh perspective, curiosity, and youthful energy to the family dynamic. Whether it’s exploring local attractions, engaging in cultural activities, or simply spending quality time together, a villa holiday allows for intergenerational learning, promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of each family member’s unique experiences.
Flexibility and Freedom
Villa Tess, Algarve
One of the key advantages of a villa holiday is the flexibility and freedom it affords each family member. Unlike traditional resort or hotel stays, a villa provides ample space for everyone to unwind and relax. Grandparents can enjoy quiet moments, parents can engage in leisurely activities, and children can explore their creativity freely. The ability to set your own schedule and tailor the holiday experience to suit each person’s preferences ensures that everyone feels content and fulfilled, resulting in a more rejuvenating and satisfying getaway for all.
Cost-Effective and Economical
When planning a multi-generational holiday, cost considerations often come into play. A villa holiday is usually the most cost-effective option, especially when compared to booking separate accommodations for each family unit. By sharing the cost of a villa, families can allocate their budget more efficiently and even have extra funds for additional activities or excursions. Moreover, having access to a kitchen allows for self-catering, reducing dining expenses. By maximizing resources and minimizing costs, a villa holiday becomes an economical choice that offers excellent value for money.
Embracing the beauty of togetherness while honouring the unique perspectives and contributions of each generation, this holiday idea promises an unforgettable experience that will be treasured for years to come. Continuously ranked as one of the safest and most beautiful places to visit in Europe, Madeira offers visitors breathtaking levada walks, picturesque cities, epic gorges, delicious fresh seafood and plenty of stunning landscapes to explore. If you’re looking for a quiet haven where you can get closer to nature with a sunny year-round climate, this is the island to visit. Here’s why you might want to book a villa in the regions of Funchal, Calheta or Prazares this year.
Incredible scenery
Madeira is famous for its hilly landscapes offering epic views and picturesque villages. It’s worth hiring a car to explore the more rural and quiet north, while down on the south coast of the island, the vibe is busier thanks to the capital city of Funchal, and most attractions, bars, and restaurants are within easy walking distance. Discover the famous natural swimming pools of Porto Moniz, hike mount Pico Ruivo with a walking guide, or visit Curral das Freiras, known as the Valley of the Nuns, where you’ll find the panoramic viewpoint of Eira do Serrado. Another peaceful spot is Prazares in the west, home to just 700 inhabitants and beautiful hillside walks that look out onto the ocean. Another must-see (easily reached from Funchal city centre via cable car), is the Madeira Botanical Garden, with beautifully planted terraces, a cactus garden, and traditional Santana houses.
Famous walks
If you love getting out in nature for a hike, you’ll feel right at home in Madeira. We’d recommend the Levada do Rei walk, otherwise known as PR18 (which is its unique trail code). It’s an 11km route that takes you through tunnels, underneath waterfalls, into laurel forests and up peaks that are so high, you’ll literally have your head in the clouds! There are plenty of walking tours available across the island, with gentler trails for novices and moderate ones for the more experienced trekker.
You’ll fall in love with Funchal
As the most populous city on the island, Funchal is home to cobbled streets (in vibrant patterns), independent art galleries, coffee shops, renowned restaurants, museums and the list goes on. Visit Funchal market on Fridays – a buzzing hub of energy, noise and colour with fresh local produce, flowers and craft items. Take a stroll down Rua de Santa Maria, tour the cathedral, and visit the Cristiano Ronaldo museum to discover more about one of Madeira’s most famous natives. Don’t forget to take a stop at a local patisserie for coffee and cake!
The food is delicious
Although it may be a Portuguese territory, Madeira has its own flavours that are not just a copycat version of Lisbon. Sample traditional custard tarts (pastel de nata), sweet cakes and biscuits at local patisseries, and plenty of fish and seafood on the main menu, including the local delicacy of black scabbard fish. The island’s national dish is known as espetada – beef, squid or monkfish skewers dressed with garlic, bay leaves and salt. As for dessert, many dishes centre around the banana and passionfruit trees you can see on the island.

Now we’ve inspired you, it’s time to get planning and booking your dream holiday villa in the sunshine for the 2023 bank holidays.
As the days get shorter and the nights draw in, many of us start to miss the summer sunshine, even with Christmas just around the corner. Cure your longing for a few rays and treat yourself to a winter villa holiday. Escape to one of the volcanic islands in the Canaries, or the green and lush island of Madeira off the northwest African coast. Let us inspire you with some ideal destinations for your next winter sun villa holiday.
Madeira
With a subtropical climate of between 18-24°C in the winter, Madeira is the ideal location for winter sun villa holidays, as you can enjoy the beaches and sea all year round. Swim in volcanic pools, take a cable car up to the botanical gardens in Funchal, hike to waterfalls, go mountain biking, or take a trek to the heart of the Laurissilva forest – it’s all possible here when you have a winter holiday. The island offers a mixture of forests, beaches, nature reserves, gardens, nightlife, and mountains – all right on your doorstep waiting to be discovered.
Wander around the many villages dotted across the island and you’ll notice quiet ancient churches, chapels, museums and monuments, and daily markets selling local wares and produce. Because of the pleasant weather all year round, there’s always something going on in terms of outdoor activities, too. Whether it’s taking a boat trip, paragliding, or taking part in a festivity in a town square, there’s something to suit all tastes.
When you’re not relaxing and enjoying the comfort of your Villa Vista Sol with its outstanding views of Funchal, why not have a calming day out experiencing the Monte Palace Tropical gardens, which features a traditional Japanese garden with pagoda and koi pond, and a beautiful array of European azaleas, cacti and heather. Or, if you’re more into adventure, Madeira is one of Europe’s best diving scuba diving destinations, with plenty of dive centres offering PADI courses and trips to swim with dolphins, turtles and monk seals. Even in February, the water is a more comfortable 18°C, which is still warmer than a lot of European countries in the summer months.
Lanzarote
Positioned only 70 miles from Africa, Lanzarote is a popular tourist destination for winter sun holidays thanks to its year-round sunshine and mild climate. The island has UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status, and a rich desert-like volcanic landscape, making it a common destination for film locations, too. The warm weather and natural beauty of the island make it an ideal destination for spending days walking or relaxing on the beach, enjoying a dip in the heated pool of your Villa Giorgia, or touring the island and exploring the smaller villages inland by car.
The most popular attraction on Lanzarote, and probably the most frequented on a winter holiday, is the Timanfaya National Park, which is home to the Fire Mountains, created by a natural eruption on the island during the 17th century. The volcanic landscape is home to many different flora and fauna, and is an interesting place to take a hike while exploring the island’s nature.
Another destination on your itinerary should be the Cesar Manrique foundation and cactus garden. Manrique was a local architect and artist who campaigned for there to be no high-rise buildings on Lanzarote, and you can see many buildings designed by him across the island. If you visit the cactus garden that he designed, you’ll find over 1,400 species of cacti.
If you’re interested in a winter sun villa holiday to soak up some rays on the beach, Playa Blanca and Papagayo are worth visiting in the winter months for walks or a dip in the sea. At the end of February, the island hosts its annual carnival, with processions taking place in tourist resorts and Arrecife.
Fuerteventura
Just 100km away from the coast of Morocco is Fuerteventura – the second largest of the Canary Islands. If you’re a sun worshipper longing for a winter holiday with blue skies and azure waters, this is the place to come. With long, golden sandy beaches, epic sand dunes and a pleasant climate, the island is a great destination for the whole family on a winter villa holiday. The island has a slow pace and relaxed way of life, with excellent facilities in resort areas. If time allows, we recommend spending a day or two hiring a car and touring the island’s ancient fishing villages and mountainous interior.
The most popular resort on the island is Corralejo, which is positioned on the northern coast. Here you’ll find plenty of restaurants and local markets, water sports enthusiasts and local entertainment. Despite being so popular with visitors, the resort has maintained to keep its unique character, and there’s plenty of sandy beaches to stretch out on. Temperatures on Fuerteventura rarely drop below 18°C in the winter, making it an ideal destination for a winter villa holiday in our Villa Lola, which comes complete with a private heated pool and a central location that’s just a 20 minute walk from Corralejo.
Away from the larger resorts and closer to the island’s airport, you’ll find the small fishing village of El Cotillo, which still offers a slow, tranquil pace and plenty of boutique shops, bars and restaurants, and a working fishing harbour. Here you’ll also find natural lagoons and unspoiled beaches just south of the village. On the Jandia peninsula, you’ll find the highest point of the island (the Pico de Zarza), and the island’s nature reserve, which has been home to wildlife for centuries, and offers plenty of nature trails to explore if you’re up for a hike.
Tenerife
Five million travellers head to Tenerife each year, making it the most popular destination in the Canary Islands. It is also the largest island in the archipelago, and easy to get to with just a four-hour flight time from London. The island is home to Mount Teide, an epic volcano that sits in the Teide National Park at a height of 12,200ft. Temperatures in Tenerife are a balmy 22°C in wintertime. However, the peaks of the Las Cañadas del Teide can get topped with snow in winter too, creating an incredible backdrop to winter holiday photos. It also gives visitors an excuse to trek Teide National Park in the snow during the morning, before heading back to the warm coastal resorts for a swim later in the day. If you don’t have a car to visit Teide National Park, there are plenty of coach trips to choose from, including some that visit at night to include stargazing and telescope experiences. Teide National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers the largest variety of supra-Mediterranean flora and vegetation in the world. The park also gives visitors plenty of caves and lava tongues to explore.
If you’re thinking of a winter villa holiday with your loved ones, Tenerife has plenty in store for families. Visit Siam Park in Costa Adeje – a Thailand-themed water park that is open all year round. Here you’ll get water slides, a wave pool, lazy river and shark aquarium. Or how about Loro Zoo, with its penguins, flamingos, and dolphins? Or if a laid-back stroll is more your thing, why not visit the botanical gardens where you can enjoy time in nature surrounded by the beauty of waterfalls flowing into the sea, bamboo canes, sculptures, palms, succulents, and dragon trees.
Beach lovers are catered for too, with plenty of shores to choose from when it comes to sunbathing and water sports. When you feel like you can part from the heated pool of your luxury Villa Colibri, you can take a stroll around or sunbathe on Playa Jardin or the man-made golden beaches of Playa de Las Teresitas or Playa de las Américas. As evening descends, head to a local restaurant to sample some of the delicious gastronomy. We recommend local potatoes dressed with paprika, peppers and mojo sauce, Canarian stew made with local vegetables and fish, or island cheeses like Arico-Fasnia, Anaga, Teno and El Tanque.
Considered a gem of an isle located just off the Greek mainland, the unspoiled island of Lefkada is what Greek holiday dreams are made of. Expect clean beaches, azure seas and epic white cliffs topped with lush green forest, and mountainous winding roads that lead to local historical sites filled with natural beauty. Here’s a list of things to do in Lefkada while enjoying your Lefkada villa holiday.
Soak up some rays on Egremni Beach
Egremni Beach
Adventure seekers and sun worshippers alike will enjoy soaking up a few rays on Egremni Beach, located in the more wild south-western corner of Lefkada. This isn’t one you can easily walk to – as the beach is surrounded by very steep and inaccessible cliffs. The only way to get there is by taking a boat trip – which is an adventure in itself! Boat trips to Egremni depart from Vasiliki port in the morning (companies to look out for include the Agifili taxi boat, and the Ionian Princess of Lefkas Cruises). You can also catch a boat from Nidri port for a pleasant trip. Boat rides take between 50-60 minutes. Once you arrive at the beach, it is well worth the wait. Unspoiled waters make snorkelling and swimming a must, with powdery white-soft sand underfoot. Make sure to take plenty of sunscreen, as there is very little shade, and food and drinks for the day.
Visit the Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni
Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni
When you feel like venturing out a little further from your Lefkada villa, hop in the car and take a drive to this beautiful monastery – located high on a hilltop overlooking Lefkada town. It is home to the icon of the Virgin Mary, which is Lefkada’s patron saint. There is also a site with a temple dedicated to Artemis, the goddess of hunting. This area is spiritually significant to the island, as the Apostle Paul is believed to have asked his students Herdio, Aquila and Sosiona to give sermons about Jesus from the hilltop in 63AD. The monastery dates back to the 17th century, and features a museum with many interesting artefacts.
Cool off at Nydri Waterfalls
Nydri Waterfalls
Of course, you’ll always have your luxury pool in Villa Angelou Nidri for taking a dip. But when you also want to connect with Mother Nature, head to the coastal town of Nydri, where you’ll find a hiking trail that leads to this stunning gorge, featuring a beautiful waterfall that just beckons you to jump into its natural pool. The hike to Nydri waterfalls is one of the most enjoyable things to do in Lefkada, and stimulates the senses at every turn. Take in the scent of pine, citrus and olive groves, and then head to a narrow ravine, where you’ll need to hop over some rocks before finding the gorge. Where the trail enters the gorge, you’ll find a cafe stocking refreshments, and local market stalls selling local honey. Be aware that if you visit in the dry season, the waterfalls may not be as active.
Spend the day in the resort of Vasiliki
Vasiliki
Situated in a wide bay on the south of the island, Vasiliki benefits from high winds during the afternoons, making it a great spot for surfing, windsurfing and other watersports. The water is particularly inviting here, so if you’re keen on taking a dip, this is the place to be. Newbies and beginners may want to take advantage of the watersports schools that run lessons in the early mornings. If that isn’t your thing, you can take a leisurely stroll around the harbour, or find a spot on the pebbled beach for some relaxation time while watching the surf. There are also plenty of biking and hiking trails from the resort, leading up into the valley for epic photographs of the surrounding scenery.
Take a boat trip around Lefkada
Lefkada villa holidays are all about taking it easy – so why not cast off and explore the island from the sea by taking a boat tour, or hiring your own yacht for the day? You’re bound to see the Lefkada coastline in all its glorious beauty, with dozens of deserted coves and caves to discover and nearby islands to visit – like Meganisi. Organised boat tours often allow time for snorkelling and swimming, and provide a traditional Greek lunch on board, including fresh fruit, tzatziki and souvlaki.
Visit a Greek vineyard
Fancy a tipple? Go on – you’re on holiday! If you venture into the hilly centre of Lefkada, you’ll come across its vineyards – where Vertzami and white Vardea grapes produce rich, full bodied wine. Because of its hilly terrain and high amounts of rainfall in the winter months, wine production in this part of Greece is particularly high. You’ll find three main wineries worth visiting – Karsanikos and Sifloko in the north of Lafkada, and Lefkas Earth Winery on the south of the island. At Lefkas Earth Winery in particular, you’ll be able to take a free tour of its wine-making facilities and ancient stone buildings, and of course, take part in a tasting experience. Make sure to take a taxi back to your Villa Pasteli Sweet when you’ve finished your tasting!
Spend the day with your family at Ammoussa Beach
Ammoussa Beach
Of course, our villas in Lefkada all feature private pools. But sometimes, the beach beckons. Nestled in a quiet and tranquil cove on the south coast of Lefkada, Ammoussa Beach is a secret you’ll want to keep to yourself. With stunning views of neighbouring Kefalonia, and gentle waters that are great for snorkelling or splashing about with the kids, this beautiful bay is well worth spending the day in. You won’t get much of a breeze either, as the beach is sheltered by the surrounding cove walls. For refreshments, there’s a nearby beach bar, where you can have drinks and nibbles delivered right to your table. Sun loungers are also available for hire for €3 per day.
Where is the villa in the Villa Plus advert? It’s a question many people have asked us when spotting our properties on TV! Here’s where you’ll find some of our Villa Plus TV advert properties and locations, including things you can see and do while enjoying your holiday.
This stunning villa is all about waking up in the morning to incredible views. Imagine enjoying uninterrupted sea vistas from almost every aspect of your property, and falling asleep to calming breezes and lapping waves. All three of this property’s bedrooms face the sea, and you can easily while away the hours in the breathtaking pool, which looks out onto the coastline. All the little luxuries are taken care of, including a large stone BBQ, fully appointed kitchen, private sun terrace, heated pool and WiFi.
When you need to head out, a 15-minute walk along a nearby country lane will take you to the fishing village of Agios Stefanos, which offers several well-regarded tavernas serving local delicacies, and shops. The village is the perfect escape for a tranquil family holiday. Think traditional Greek whitewashed houses, historic churches and monasteries, and unspoiled olive groves.
You’ll witness some fantastic sunsets due to the village’s location on Corfu, and will also be close to the 2km golden sand Agios Stefanos beach – a Blue Flag stretch of sand with safe waters for swimming. Corfu Town is a short drive away, where you will find beautiful Neoclassical buildings, the Museum of Asian Art, the Ionian Academy, and Liston Paved Avenue – where you’ll find lots of restaurants and cafes.
Villa Nenufa, The Algarve
This palatial 4-bedroom villa boasts a grand entrance with marble staircase, spacious gardens, and a large heated pool. With its tranquil charm, you and your family can relax while being surrounded by charming Portuguese decor, epic surrounding views, and all the mod-cons you could ever need.
Kick back and relax on the spacious terrace, or take a refreshing dip in the large, heated swimming pool, surrounded by manicured private gardens. In the evening, after a day of exploring, you can unwind in the shaded terrace and dine alfresco overlooking the sea, after rustling up some delicious cuisine on the brick BBQ. Villa Nenufa’s location in Vale de Parra also offers a great location for local amenities, with plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance, and Castelo beach just a five-minute drive away.
If you feel like heading out further, the buzzing nightlife, marina, golf courses and family-oriented waterparks of Albufeira are just a short drive away.
Marina of Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal
Nissaki, Corfu
The resort of Nissaki is known for its quiet atmosphere, slow pace and beautiful pebbled beaches. Its main centre is found in the heart of the village, with lots of shops and traditional Greek housing, surrounded by pine forests. The main beach at Nissaki is small, but has two tavernas where you can pick up snacks and traditional Greek food. There are lots of sun loungers to hand, and crystal clear waters that make it an ideal location for swimming and snorkelling.
Villas on this part of the island are well-known for their outstanding sea views, and Villa Vrysoulla is no exception. Its star attraction is the L-shaped infinity pool that neighbours the spacious sea-facing terrace, giving you exceptional sea and coastal views.
There’s also a private covered terrace where you can dine alfresco, or simply relax with a glass of wine in the evenings. Behind the villa, you’ll have views of Mount Pantokrator, which is the highest point on Corfu island. No doubt about it, this property is all about having a majestic location.
Dreaming of a holiday on Portugal’s southern coast? Vilamoura is the place to be. It’s a stylish resort nestled in the heart of the Algarve that is highly popular for its pristine beaches and warm weather. There’s also one of the largest marinas in the whole of Portugal, which is home to over 1000 glamorous boats and yachts. We’ve showcased our TV villas on this part of the island, where you’ll find plenty of glitz and glam with boutiques, clubs, and top-notch cuisine from award-winning restaurants.
Nightlife in Vilamoura is based around the marina, with plenty of bars, clubs and a casino. For day trips, visitors can also take fishing trips, and tours of the island that take tourists to nearby water parks, Roman ruins and attractions. Either side of the marina you’ll find sandy beaches and a surfing school with plenty of watersports – the ideal place for a beach day if you feel like spending time away from your private villa. If you’re considering staying in Vilamoura, we recommend Villa Casa do Mel – a spacious and modern four bedroom property set in the outskirts of the resort. You’ll have your very own home-from-home complete with private heated pool, air conditioning, WiFi and an alfresco dining area.
This beautiful, picturesque resort on Corfu’s west side is iconic for featuring in the Villa Plus TV advert, and is arguably one of the most famous resorts for its beauty and lush olive groves. Its name comes from the word ‘Paleokastritsa’, meaning ‘old fortress’.
The village used to have a castle, where you’ll now find the Monastery of the Virgin, which is home to lots of post-Byzantine antiques. The village isn’t too far from Corfu Town, which you can head to for bustling nightlife, tavernas and shopping. Paleokastritsa stretches along the coast, to a harbour where you can pick up an excursion boat for the day – a great adventure for the whole family. The main beach is smaller than other shores on the island, but is quieter, with calm waters and stunning views.
There are many nearby tavernas selling food and refreshments if you feel like spending a day lazing on the sand. Why not try the beautiful Villa Victoras, just a short drive north and boasting manicured gardens, a private swimming pool and incredible sea views.
The Canary Islands are an all-year-round destination, offering UK holidaymakers endless winter sun. Jodie and Alex from the Villa Plus team travelled to the island at the end of March 2022 to see what it had to offer, and were not disappointed! Here’s the story of their holiday experience…
After four hours of in-flight chatting, before we knew it, we were descending onto the runway into sunny Lanzarote. There is no better feeling than getting off the aircraft and being greeted by the warm Spanish air hitting your face and filling you with vitamin D.
Lanzarote airport is fairly small, so we were through passport control and baggage collection within just half an hour, which kept things nice and simple. We didn’t have a hire car to pick up, so we left the arrivals hall and jumped into one of the many taxis queued up outside the airport to head to our villa in Matagorda, Villa Kikay. The area of Matagorda is only a short five-minute drive from the airport, and the cab ride cost us around €11.
Our centrally-located villa offered three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a heated pool and a great location in Matagorda – just a five-minute walk from the main shopping centre and beachfront. We arrived at our villa quite late in the evening, so we unpacked our bags, freshened up and headed out to explore the immediate area and get our bearings. We found a lovely restaurant on the beachfront, where we had dinner and a cocktail before heading back to our villa for the night.
Visiting Puerto del Carmen
Matagorda to Puerto del Carmen
The next morning, we were up and ready for our first full day of exploring! On went the walking shoes, and off we went with a coffee in hand for a 45-minute walk along the beach front from Matagorda to Puerto del Carmen. There is a long promenade which follows the coastline all the way around from one resort to the other. Here you’ll find great shopping, restaurants and cafes along the walk – perfect for a quick pit stop to admire the views.
Puerto del Carmen is nestled on the coast in the southern central part of the island, and is only a 10-minute drive from the airport. The main Avenida de Las Playas, fondly known as “The Strip”, offers bars, restaurants, shopping, supermarkets, car hire and duty-free shopping. The strip has something to offer everyone – whether you’re travelling as a family, couple, or with friends.
Playa Grande Beach
We found Puerto Del Carmen to be the largest resort on the island. It spans four miles across three golden sand beaches. Playa Grande Beach was clearly the heart of the resort – a mile-long stretch backed by many bars and restaurants. At one end of the strip is the Old Town and harbour, where you can enjoy traditional tapas and the catch of the day at the many eateries on offer. At the other end of the strip is a more lively scene, with plenty of bars and restaurants open until the early hours.
Towards the end of our second day in Puerto Del Carmen, we found a beautiful and very picturesque award-winning seafront bar called ‘Café La Ola’, with stunning uninterrupted sunset views, a range of cocktails and delicious dining options. Alex and I shared a jug of the most incredible sangria while playing cards and watching the sun set.
Café La Ola
As we had chosen to visit Lanzarote in March, the evenings were a little chilly, so once the sun had gone down, we left to find a taverna where we both enjoyed traditional garlic prawn tapas, along with some paella. After a busy day of exploring, we found a taxi along the strip and were back at our home from home in just 15 minutes.
Touring Playa Blanca
Playa Blanca
On our final day, we met up with our very friendly and helpful resort manager Lyn, who kindly drove us from Matagorda to Playa Blanca, which takes around 30 minutes. If you’re in Lanzarote, then Playa Blanca is definitely worth a visit. If you do not have car hire, don’t worry, as you’re able to take a local bus, with travel times of just an hour.
Our overall impression of Playa Blanca was that it seemed more upmarket, with luxury bars and hotels overlooking the fantastic sandy beaches. We found the main bars and restaurants to be busier than Matagorda, but quieter than Puerto Del Carmen. For us, it really was the perfect mix of the two resorts! If you wanted to, you can actually get a ferry from Playa Blanca to Fuerteventura and do a bit of island hopping for the day! It only takes around 30 minutes, and costs approximately €40.
One of the absolute highlights of Playa Blanca was the Marina Rubicon. This luxurious leisure hub is a great place to try some water sports or simply wander around in the evenings.
Marina Rubicon
Overall, both Alex and I had an amazing three days in Lanzarote, and fell in love with Playa Blanca in particular! We will certainly be visiting again.

You might also want to take a credit card with you, in the unlikely even that you should need access to emergency funds.

If you’re planning a holiday to the beautiful Greek island of Rhodes, get ready to sample plenty of rich culture and history, with ruins that date back hundreds of years to ancient civilisations and worlds gone by. History lovers will enjoy discovering the many places of historical importance that the island has to offer, and the stories behind the many ancient relics that are left behind. There are a few castles in Rhodes that offer a fascinating glimpse into what life was like on the isle in the Byzantine era. Why not visit them all during your villa holiday? Here’s our guide to the best must-see castles in Rhodes.
Monolithos Castle
The castle of Monolithos in Rhodes, Greece
In the village of Monolithos, is the grand Monolithos castle. In ancient times, the castle had three entrances – one for troops, one for supplies and service goods, and one secret entrance via steep steps carved into rock. Monolithos castle is a must-see when visiting Rhodes, as it offers incredible views that make for beautiful photos in your holiday album. Climbing the rocky steps from the village below to the castle is all part of the experience. On your way up, you’ll pass piles of rocks that previous visitors have placed as mementos across the centuries. It’s a bit of a climb, but definitely worth it.
The castle was reconstructed in around 1476, when D’ Aubusson was Grand Master of the Order. You’ll notice his shield carved into the gate upon entry – a symbol of strength and the castle’s status as one of the strongest fortresses of the Ionnite period. You can take tours that provide insight and talks on the historical significance of Monolithos castle.
Lindos Castle
The castle of Lindos in Rhodes, Greece
The ancient site of Lindos castle in Rhodes is arguably the most impressive on the island. Surrounded by dramatic landscape, and perched on a cliff that’s 116m high, Lindos castle boasts incredible sea views, and well-preserved fortress walls and columns that make it one of the most-visited historical attractions on Rhodes. As you tour the Acropolis walls, you’ll come across the Medieval castle, the Governor’s Palace, and a Doric temple dating back to the 4th century, devoted to Athena Lindia.
This temple is where ancient civilians used to offer their patron goddess sacrifices and offerings. Near the castle, you’ll find the ancient town of Lindos, which dates back to the 10th century, and was an important shipping and trading centre because of the island’s close ties to the Middle East. If you’re looking for a fun family day out from your luxury Rhodes villa and pool, Lindos castle and the surrounding archaeological ruins are worth a visit.
Castle of Kritinia
The castle of Kritinia in Rhodes, Greece
Known as Kastello castle by the locals, the Castle of Kritinia dates back to the Venetian era, and was constructed in the 16th century. It lies on a hill positioned 131 metres above the village of Kritinia. Climb up the hill to the castle and you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the nearby islands of Chalki, Strogyli and Makri, as well as the azure waters of the Aegean Sea. Unfortunately, the castle’s shell is all that remains, but look closely while wandering around, and you’ll notice the coats of arms of two of the Grand Masters of the Medieval Era, that are close to the entrance gates.
There’s also a chapel with rather well-preserved 16th century paintings on the walls. To get to the castle, a car is ideally needed. You’ll need to make a one hour drive from Rhodes Town, before heading up a dirt path that leads right up to the castle. Remember to wear sensible closed-toe shoes for walking around the site.

Arguably one of the top places to visit in Italy – Sicily is a rugged island steeped in history. A mix of stony beaches, epic landscapes, historical architecture and delicious food and drink, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to activities. If you feel like venturing outside of your private Villa Plutos, you have 6 incredible UNESCO World Heritage sites to explore, including Mount Etna, which dominates the island’s skyline, and is Europe’s largest active volcano. Begin by exploring Siracusa, where food tasting tours are in abundance. Enjoy sampling local wines, olive oils, cold meats, cheeses and pastries, before heading to the pedestrianised Piazza del Duomo, where you’ll find a number of notable landmarks including the town hall and cathedral of Syracuse. If you have a car, head to the Valley of the Temples for an enjoyable day out, where you’ll find plenty of architecture and art to discover.
Ostuni
One of the top places to visit in Southern Italy and otherwise known as Italy’s dazzling white city, Ostuni, which is located in the Apulia region, is well known for its hot climate and sunny days, and old town featuring Roman, Byzantine and Gothic architecture. Spend some time wandering around this ornate town, taking in the stunning arches connecting buildings and narrow alleyways. Stop at a cafe for some Italian coffee, before heading to La Piazzetta Cattedrale, with an ornate facade dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Next, explore the Piazza della Liberta – an authentic plaza where you’ll find a range of shops, landmarks and cafes with a true Italian feel. As evening approaches, watch the sun set from the town’s defensive walls, offering epic views of the surrounding landscape while making memorable snaps for your holiday photo album. Have dinner in a local pasta restaurant before heading back to your traditional Villa Trullo Oro Verde.
Lecce
Travellers heading to the Puglia region should head to Lecce for a day trip, as it’s one of the best places to go in Italy. Otherwise referred to as ‘the new Florence’, the city’s old town boasts some incredible baroque architecture, and you may also spot la pietra leccese as you wander around – a kind of limestone that is used for sculpture in the region thanks to its soft and workable nature. As you wander the streets, if you encounter a bakery selling pasticciotto leccese, it’s a must-try for those with a sweet tooth. A shortcrust pastry filled with custard, it’s the regional sweet treat for Lecce, and comes in many different flavours. The city is also home to a Roman Amphitheatre that dates all the way back to 2 AD, and was discovered in 1901. Part of the structure is actually underground, while the Oronzo Square in which it sits is a favourite among locals.
Noci
A must for foodies, Noci is once of the best places to go in Italy if you love Italian food and wine, with a wealth of tours and food experiences on offer. Tracing back to Norman times, with around 20,000 inhabitants, this city is an ideal place to spend an afternoon wandering around to discover local architecture and to learn more about how Italians cook. Visit the ancient church of Barsento, or the monastery of Abbazia Madonna della Scala, before taking a tour to learn how to make real Apulian mozzarella using cow’s milk. You’ll be invited to make your own cheese and taste it afterwards, and will also learn about the different varieties of mozzarella and their origins. Olive oil tasting tours are also available, as are wine tours, which include wine tasting in a local bistro. No visit to Noci is complete without trying Panzerotto – an Italian street food that has the similar half-moon shape of a calzone. Made with fried pizza dough that is filled with mozzarella and sauce, you can learn how to make this popular dish before trying it for yourself on yet another food tour. Our top tip? Head to Noci when you’re hungry!
This is the land of long sandy beaches, epic mountain ranges, palm tree forests and vibrant bustling cities that share their home with ancient monuments. Architecture from the Venetians, Minoans and Ottomans lies at every turn, pointing to Crete’s fascinating history. So, when is the best time to book flights to Crete and take your dream villa holiday? It all depends on the types of activities your family will be doing, and how high you’d like the mercury. Here’s our guide to the best time to visit Crete.
Summer (May – August)
The summer season is the best time to visit Crete. The mercury starts to climb up to 24-25ºC in June, with mild and balmy evenings. By July-August, the island sees daily temperatures between 28ºC-31ºC, and it is the time of year when visitors and locals alike head to the beaches to make the most of the glorious weather and sea temperatures of 24ºC. But although the temperatures rise, so do the numbers of people visiting attractions, so be prepared for slightly longer waiting times and queues. July can be a windy month as the sirocco winds from Africa heat up the island. If you’re a wine lover, the Rethymnon Wine Festival takes place in June, and is an absolute must.
Autumn (September – October)
If you’ve come to Crete to hit the glorious beaches of Marathi, Krios and Plakias (among others), the months of September and October are the best time of year to visit. Expect fewer crowds, less people in eateries and resorts, and glorious beach weather. Temperatures still continue to hit the mid-twenties, making the weather ideal for topping up your tan, swimming in the sea and sightseeing. The climate is still very warm around this time of year, but without inflicting scorching heat, which some may find more comfortable if they’re exploring the Palace of Knossos, touring Rethimno’s Venetian Harbour, or taking a dip in their private pool in their Villa Elounda Pelagos. With an average of six hours of sunshine per day, there’s still plenty of warmth to experience this stunning island. October is also when the island’s Chestnut Festival is held, marking the beginning of the autumn. Locals descend on the town of Elos to celebrate food made with chestnuts. Expect live music, plenty of drinking, dancing and fabulous street food.
Spring (March – April)
Spring can be the best time to visit Crete if you want a quieter, more laid-back holiday that is free of crowded resorts. March can be a bit unpredictable for weather, so do pack accordingly. That said, temperatures often float around 15-17°C as April begins, offering up ideal weather for exploring historical ruins and nature parks, without the queues. Average sea temperatures in spring peak at 16°C, and in fact the sea tends to be warmer than the outdoor air if you want to enjoy a refreshing dip! In March, the 1821 Memorial Parade takes place, while the Burning of Judas festivities take place in April.
Winter (November-February)
While lying on the beach may not be on the cards, this doesn’t mean that there isn’t plenty to do and explore on this island. This is when the locals enjoy boisterous and exuberant festivals. Accommodation can get booked up, as visitors want to enjoy a more authentic and quieter experience on their Cretan holiday, so it is best to plan early. The St. Minas Parade, celebrating the patron saint of Heraklion, takes place in November, while the Rethymnon Carnival usually takes place in either January or February – expect partying, dancing and vehicles made out of styrofoam! As the island comes into November, evenings do get a little chilly, so you’ll need a coat and some warm trousers, as the mercury can dip to 13°C (but achieve peaks of 21°C during the day).
Dreaming of soaking up the sunshine in Greece? The island of Crete has it all – ancient ruins and attractions, dramatic mountainous landscapes, lush olive groves, a buzzing nightlife, pristine white-sand beaches and attractions galore for the little ones. Here are some of the most unique things to do in Crete.
Visit the Malia Ruins
If you’re thinking of more adventurous things to do in Crete, head to the town of Malia, where just a few kilometres east you will find historical ruins dating back 4,000 years. Constructed in 1900 BC, the ruins are of a former Minoan palace which was then destroyed by an earthquake 200 years after it was built. Visitors are given free maps to explore the site. Step back in time as you tour the palace courtyards, altars, grand staircase and pillars. Don’t forget to visit the exhibition hall which features a model of how the palace would have looked in Minoan times.
Hop on a boat trip to Spinalonga
As one of the more off-the-beaten-track must-do things in Crete, the island of Spinalonga has a rich and interesting history that just beckons to be explored. Take a boat for a day trip from Aghios Nikolaos and discover winding cobbled streets, a Turkish fortress and a former leper colony village that was romanticised in Victoria Hislop’s novel The Island. After a day of exploring, head back to your Villa Elea for dinner beneath the stars in your private garden.
Spend a day on the beach
Whether you like to play volleyball on the sand, swim in azure waters, snorkel or take part in water sports, there is a beach for you in Crete. Heraklion and the surrounding areas feature a selection of beautiful shores, with the popular resorts of Malia, Amoudara and Agia Pelagia offering a range of bars and restaurants right on the sand so that you can make a day of topping up your tan. Diving schools are available in Hersonissos, Agia Pelagia and Gouves, offering diving and snorkelling to those who want to get closer to native sea life on the island. If you want to get away from the bustle and crowds to a more secluded cove, Agia Pelagia Psaromoura and Paleokastro offer more peaceful retreats with stunning views.
Visit Kotsifou Gorge
Those who love getting back to nature will love hiking Kotsifou Gorge, which offers spectacular views of the island while showcasing beautiful flora and fauna. At the top of the hill, once you have hiked upwards, you are greeted by a small Greek Orthodox chapel where you can admire the stunning vistas below. A romantic and beautiful place to watch the sun rise or set.
Tour Rethymnon Venetian Harbour
When you want to head out a little further from your private Villa Chloe up in the hills, hop in the car and take a leisurely drive to the resort of Rethymnon, featuring the popular attraction that is the Venetian Harbour – considered the most stunning boat harbour on the island and one of the most popular things to do in Crete. It isn’t hard to see why – take a tour of Rethymnon Old Town and discover traditional beautiful town houses in a Venetian style, as well as local tavernas, bars and eateries serving up local fare and freshly caught seafood – an ideal place to stop for lunch and soak up island culture. After exploring the harbour, head to the Venetian Lighthouse and the nearby beach to catch a few rays.
Now you’ve planned your itinerary and discovered some of best things to do in Crete, you’ll need to start browsing our range of premium holiday villas in Crete, where you’ll find your home from home on the island.
Dreaming of a sunny villa holiday in the Canary Islands? The island of Fuerteventura has it all – including sprawling beaches, intriguing road trips, nature parks, fascinating cultural sights, tranquil villages, and of course – a year-round mild climate. Here’s our guide to the best things to do in Fuerteventura.
Visit Corralejo National Park
This is one of the island’s most popular attractions, welcoming visitors all year round. The park is famous for its iconic sand dunes and vast beaches that are ideal for surfing, windsurfing and other water sports. If you don’t have your own car to drive around the park, you can take a buggy tour, which begins in Corralejo before heading towards the Natural Park. Some tours also head towards the volcanic area so that you can really get back to nature!
Take a day trip to Lobos Island
If you feel like heading out on a unique day trip while on your villa holiday, take a catamaran to Lobos Island, which is completely uninhabited and feels miles away from the rest of the world. Trips can either take you around the island in about four hours, or you can swim in the various coves and lagoons the island has to offer. After all that sailing, swimming and sea air, you’ll enjoy a very relaxing night’s sleep once your head hits the pillow in your Villa Del Mar.
Enjoy Oasis Park with your family
This attraction is on most people’s lists when it comes to Fuerteventura things to do and see, and is arguably one of the best things to do in Fuerteventura with little ones. Take in the views as you wander around this green and beautiful park, with birds of prey shows, the biggest cactus garden in the whole of the Canaries, Kids’ Farm and animal park. The whole family will love learning about the variety of animals living at the park, as well as the fun activities and educational wildlife workshops on offer.
Take a walk at Cofete beach
Discover one of the many beaches on the island that hasn’t been spoiled by mass tourism – no trip to Fuerteventura is complete without visiting Cofete. Swimming is not advised, as the waters are very choppy and dangerous, but walking and sunbathing are an absolute must. Bring water and food with you if you plan on spending the day here, as there are no facilities – just Mother Nature in all her glory. Enjoy the epic sweeping views of the mountains as you wander along the shoreline, with the ocean as your soundtrack. A perfect romantic retreat for couples who want to escape the bustling resorts.
Take the hike up Pico de la Zarza
If you prefer more of an active holiday instead of lazing on the beach, Fuerteventura offers plenty of walking and hiking trails to get you into the great outdoors. With an altitude of 807m, Pico de la Zarza is the island’s highest peak and gives those who hike it stunning views of Playa de Cofete, making for memorable holiday snaps. You should always start your hike in the morning when it is cooler, especially because there is no shade as you make your way up. Take plenty of water and sun cream with you, and wear appropriate hiking shoes.
Shop local produce at one of the island’s markets
Wherever you stay in Fuerteventura, there is always a market close by selling everything from food items like olive oil and local wine, to lace, pottery and crafts. The market in El Campanario (in Corralejo) for example features original and unique handmade items that make for perfect souvenirs, as well as a range of food stalls and live music performances.

Considered one of the best things to do in Tenerife (south), this stunning national park consists of volcanos, sand dunes, rivers made of petrified lava and craters. The main feature though is the majestic Teide volcano that dominates the landscape at 3,718 metres high. If you have a car to get around while staying in your Villa Venezuela, there are many roads that lead across the park, which head to various beaches, viewpoints, amenities and a visitors’ centre. Once parked, there are often multiple walking trails that you can take to discover this epic UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can also hike or take a cable car up to the summit of Mount Teide, where you are rewarded with stunning views of the Canaries, although you’ll need to get a permit beforehand if you not taking an organised tour. Space lovers will also enjoy a guided tour of the Teide Observatory, which is famous for being the world’s largest solar observatory, positioned at 2,400m above sea level.
Hike to one of the island’s tallest villages
Considered to be a miniature version of Macchu Picchu, Masca village is one of the tallest villages on the island, and is very popular with hikers who enjoy the challenge of a 3-5 hour climb up to its lofty heights. The hike is one of the best things to do in Tenerife, and takes walkers up a ravine full of majestic flora and various animals, viewpoints and amazing photo opportunities. Wear comfortable walking shoes and take refreshments if you plan on undertaking this epic challenge! You can then take a water taxi from Masca Bay to return to Los Gigantes. It is always recommended that you travel with a guide, due to the rough terrain.
Top up your tan at the beach
Whether you’re looking for amazing things to do in Tenerife’s north or south, you’ll be sure to find a beach that suits your needs. With over 400km of coastline on offer, and 17 beaches with Blue Flag status, it is little wonder that so many flock to Tenerife every year because of its beautiful beaches. We recommend checking out Santa Cruz’s Playa de las Teresitas, which features imported sand from the Sahara. Its soft powdery shores and calm azure waters are great for those who love swimming and snorkelling, and the beach is popular with families and locals. If you want something a little more quiet and off the beaten track, try Playa El Puertito or Playa del Pozo. These beaches often have little in the way of facilities, so bring food and refreshments with you if you plan on visiting for the day. If you are visiting Tenerife for surfing, the one beach you should be heading to is El Medano in the south, which is considered one of the best shores for kite and windsurfing thanks to its winds.

The Greek island of Zante (otherwise known as Zakynthos), offers tourists everything from beautiful beaches and a vibrant nightlife, to quiet walking trails and ancient monuments and sites galore. Whether you want to visit this sunshine-soaked island to top up your tan on the beach, enjoy watersports or get stuck into its fascinating history and culture, you won’t be stuck for things to do. Here’s our guide to the most interesting things to do in Zante.
Visit Smugglers’ Cove
This beach is one of the most famous coves in all of Greece, and is one of the best Zante things to do for families. The most popular attraction on the beach is the notable shipwreck, which is known in Greek as ‘Navagio’. It is one of the most iconic sights on the island and all of Greece. The wreck happened over 30 years ago, when poor weather caused the ship to run aground as it tried to escape the Greek Navy, who were chasing it because of contraband cargo. With stunning views, soft powdery sand and gentle azure waters, the whole family will be able to catch some rays, snorkel, swim and build sandcastles together on this beautiful stretch of coastline.
Cool off at the Water Village
If you want to splash out in something a little bigger than the private pool of your Villa Maira Azalea, then it’s worth a visit to the wild Water Village – a thrilling water park with plenty of slides, rides and attractions to keep the entire family entertained and cooled off from the heat of the day. Adrenaline junkies will love the Kamikaze slides, Black Hole and Sinkhole, while those that want a calmer pace will enjoy the lazy river and various sun loungers on offer. There’s plenty of eateries should you start to feel peckish, and for toddlers there’s a soft play area.
Dance the night away in Kalamaki
In the summer months, Kalamaki is the place to be if you feel like sampling Zante’s vibrant nightlife. Here you’ll find plenty of clubs, bars, restaurants and live music, with a more laid-back vibe. Most tavernas are open until the little hours, which should satisfy night owls! From Irish Pubs to traditional Greek fare and Italian food, there’s something for every taste. There’s even a sports bar if you don’t want to miss out on the football action while on holiday. Just a five minute taxi ride away is the Laganas Strip, where you’ll find plenty of festivals, clubs and international artists playing sets in clubs. One of the best things to do in Zante Town itself is to sample the vibrant nightlife, so if you’ve come to the island to dance the night away, you’ll be spoiled for choice!
Go turtle-spotting at the marine park
Just off of Zante’s south coast is Marathonissi Island, (otherwise known Turtle Island) because of the turtle and wildlife conservation that happens there. If you are interested in eco-tourism and nature, this is one of the best things to do in Zante. Originally opening in 1999, the island is home to the endangered sea turtle Caretta, as well as loggerhead turtles. In summer, the turtles lay their eggs, with up to as many as 1,300 hatching every season. Tourists can visit the island, but there are strict rules in terms of visiting times and what is allowed on the beaches in order to preserve the turtles’ natural habitat. Keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready though, as you’ll be sure to spot one.
Visit the famous Blue Grotto
The Blue Grotto is one of the most famous attractions and makes a fascinating day out for all ages. Located in the north of the island in the Skinari region, this set of caves was discovered in 1897 by Antonio Komouto, and have formed as a result of natural erosion by the sea, creating vast and enchanting chambers that are waiting to be explored. The Blue Grotto’s name comes from the vibrant blue colour of the water, which is caused by light reflection. There are many tours that explore the area by boat, which you can catch at Agios Nikolas port. Comfortable shoes are important, as the cave system has many steps. Some boats have glass floorings, so that you can see plenty of marine life as you pass through the caves.

If you’ve hired a vehicle for your villa holiday to Puglia, why not hit the road and drive to Naples for a day? This is the home of Mount Vesuvius – a still-active volcano that completely destroyed the historical Roman town of Pompeii when it erupted in AD 79. Spend the morning wandering around Pompeii itself – a city that has been preserved in ash, giving visitors a unique picture of Roman life at the time thanks to its many well-persevered buildings and artefacts. Then head to inner Naples to sample the food it is most famous for – pizza. Tuck into a delicious Neapolitan, laden with tomatoes, basil and mozzarella cheese. If time allows, a stroll along the promenade Via Caracciolo e Lungomare di Napoli is well worth it, with plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from for dinner.
